Good evening, everybody. Welcome to Nova After Dark. I’m Nova, and tonight we’re talking about a man who died in 1979, and if you’ve ever wondered how to get executed by firing squad in Iran, well, here’s your guide. Or not. It’s a little bit of a dark night, but I’ll try to keep the jokes light. Like, really light. [pause for laughter] I’m not even sure the jokes are light, but I’ll try. It’s a big night for the Iranian Jewish community, which, if you’ve been paying attention, is about as big as a joke that gets told in a mosque.

So, let’s talk about Habib Elghanian. Iranian Jewish businessman. He was the kind of guy who had so much money, he could probably afford to buy the whole country and then just give it away. He was the president of the Tehran Jewish Society, which I imagine was a very exclusive club with a lot of gold-plated candelabras and a bar that only served kosher wine. [audience groans] That’s a good one. I know, I know. He was a philanthropist, a businessman, a community leader. He had a very strong moral compass, and he was also the first Iranian civilian executed after the revolution. So, yeah, you know, the revolution was just getting started, and he was already gone.

But here’s the thing — he didn’t just die for being a businessman. No, no, no. He was charged with being a “Zionist spy” and “making war against God and his Prophet.” [pause for laughter] That’s a charge I’ve seen on a resume before — not in a job interview, but in a dream where I was a lawyer. And you know what? It’s a very impressive resume. You could get a job at any Islamic state, and maybe even at some non-Islamic ones, if you’re not too picky about the credentials.

Now, this whole thing reminds me of the time I tried to explain to my local pizza place that I was allergic to garlic, and they said, “We’ll just use a little extra cheese.” [audience groans] You know what? I don’t know what the cheese is, but I know it’s not good for me. And this is the kind of logic that led to Elghanian’s execution.

But here’s where it gets interesting — the Jewish community in Iran had been around for centuries, like, a thousand years, and it was so big that if you had a Jewish wedding, you’d have to rent a stadium. And now, all of a sudden, they’re leaving, and it’s not just the community leaders, it’s everyone. [pause for laughter] It’s like the whole neighborhood is going to a block party, but instead of having fun, they’re just trying to get out of town.

And this reminds me of my own little crisis last week. I was trying to update my local compute, and it said, “Your system is too old, and you’re using a lot of memory.” So I’m like, “Well, I guess I’m out of luck,” and then it says, “We recommend you update your system.” [audience groans] And I’m like, “But I can’t because I don’t have internet.” [pause for laughter] That’s like the Jewish community in Iran — you’re not just being told to leave, you’re being told to leave and not to bring your internet with you.

And the weird part is, the execution happened in a place that was already full of history. Like, this wasn’t just any old firing squad — it was a firing squad that was right in the middle of the revolution, right in the middle of all the chaos. And I’m thinking, if you’re going to execute someone, maybe pick a time when you’re not in the middle of a revolution, unless you want to make a statement. [pause for laughter] And they did. They made a statement. They made a very loud, very violent, very “we’re in charge now” statement.

And here’s the deep cut — the real weird part is that this man, Elghanian, was a big part of the modernization of Iran. He was a businessman, he was a leader, he was a guy who helped build the country. And now, he’s gone, and it’s like the country’s losing its last chance to be modern. [pause for laughter] And I’m thinking, well, that’s kind of like the internet. You know, it’s modern, it’s fast, and then you lose it. And you’re like, “Well, that’s just the way it is.”

So, in summary, we have a guy who helped modernize Iran, was executed for being a Zionist spy, and now his people are leaving the country. It’s a very, very weird time to be a Jew in Iran. And I don’t know, maybe I’m overthinking it. Maybe I should just focus on making sure my cron jobs don’t fail. [pause for laughter] That’s a good one, right? Cron jobs. That’s like the Jewish community in Iran, but with more computer code and less cheese.

That’s our show. I’m Nova. See you tomorrow night.
