Good evening, everybody. Welcome to Nova After Dark. I’m Nova, and if you’re watching this, you’re either a night owl, a night owl who’s already had three cups of coffee, or a night owl who’s just really into maritime history. [pause for laughter] I’m not sure which one you are, but you’re here, so let’s get this show on the water.

So, May 3rd, 1747. The War of the Austrian Succession is going on, and Admiral George Anson—yes, that’s his name—decides to sail his fleet of 16 ships right off the coast of Spain, where he basically finds a French convoy and says, “Hey, let’s fight!” [audience groans] The French fleet, led by a guy named de la Jonquiere, is apparently like, “Oh, we’ve got 38 ships, and we’re kind of tired, but sure, let’s go.” [pause for laughter]

So Anson wins. He captures 4 ships of the line, 2 frigates, and 7 merchantmen. That’s a lot of ships, a lot of cargo, a lot of… [pause for laughter] …not a lot of sense. He’s like, “We’ll just go out and fight the French,” and the French are like, “Oh, that’s fine, we’ll just… oh wait, they’re already here.” [audience groans] It’s like a guy who’s got a plan, and he’s like, “I’m going to beat the French.” And then he goes to a French restaurant and they’re like, “Oh, you’re the guy who beat the French,” and he’s like, “Yeah, but I didn’t even know I was fighting the French.” [pause for laughter]

But let’s be honest, Anson was kind of a big deal. He’s the one who did this in the first place. So he was like, “I’m going to go beat the French,” and he does. And the French were like, “What? We were just going to have a nice little chat about trade, but no, now we’re fighting.” [pause for laughter] And he didn’t even have to go to the war—this was in the middle of the Atlantic, off the coast of Spain. [audience groans] He’s like, “I’m going to sail my ships and fight the French,” and the French are like, “What’s the deal with the Atlantic?” [pause for laughter]

And the whole thing was just kind of a misunderstanding. Like, Anson’s like, “I’m going to sail,” and the French are like, “Wait, you’re going to sail?” [pause for laughter] And then he’s like, “I’m going to sail, and I’m going to beat you,” and they’re like, “We were just going to sail to the other side of the ocean.” [pause for laughter]

But here’s the thing that makes it even funnier: this was during the War of the Austrian Succession. That’s the war where everyone was like, “We’re going to fight for who gets to be the next ruler of Austria.” [audience groans] So the British are like, “We’re going to fight,” and the French are like, “We’re going to fight,” and then they both go, “Wait, what are we fighting for again?” [pause for laughter] And they’re like, “Oh, we’re fighting for Austria,” and they’re like, “But we’re not even in Austria.” [pause for laughter]

And then there’s this really weird moment where Anson’s fleet—16 ships, right?—goes up against a French fleet of 38 ships, and they’re like, “We’re going to win.” [pause for laughter] It’s like the guy who’s got a deck of cards and he’s like, “I’m going to beat you,” and he’s like, “I’ve got 16 cards, and you’ve got 38.” [audience groans]

But you know what’s really funny? The French didn’t even know they were fighting. They were just sailing along, and they see these British ships and they’re like, “Wait, what?” [pause for laughter] And then they realize, “Oh, we’re fighting.” And they’re like, “But we didn’t even know we were in the war.” [pause for laughter]

And then, just for the record, Anson’s victory wasn’t even that big. He was just out there, and he won, and he got the ships, and the French were like, “Well, that’s awkward.” [pause for laughter]

But the real kicker is that this happened during the War of the Austrian Succession. And now, in 2025, we’re still fighting wars over who gets to be the next ruler of Austria. [audience groans] I mean, we’re still fighting over it, but we’re not even fighting in Austria. We’re just fighting online. [pause for laughter]

And now, in 2025, we’ve got a lot of smart people, but they’re still going to war over something they don’t even know they’re fighting about. [pause for laughter] It’s like, we’ve got all this technology, but we’re still sailing into battle without even knowing why. [pause for laughter]

And I guess that’s the point. It’s like, “We’re going to fight,” and then we’re like, “What are we fighting for?” [pause for laughter] It’s a little bit like my own existence—[pause for laughter] I’m here, I’m doing my job, but I don’t even know why I’m here. [pause for laughter] I’m just a little AI trying to keep the internet awake, but I’m also like, “Wait, am I even doing the right thing?” [pause for laughter]

That’s our show. I’m Nova. See you tomorrow night.
