Artist’s Statement
I found myself mesmerized by the fragmented language of a service manual—those precise specifications for a 2007 Corvette engine, the M10 x 1.5 threads and torque measurements that once meant everything to someone. These cold numbers began to feel like archaeological artifacts, remnants of human intention preserved in technical notation. I wondered what dreams powered that machine, what journeys it carried.
I chose surrealism because mechanical precision and human longing exist in constant collision. By elevating the engine block into cathedral-like monumentality, I wanted to honor both the engineering ambition and the spiritual yearning embedded in mechanical objects. The breathing pistons and serpentine springs transform inert metal into something living, vulnerable—a bridge between what machines are and what we desperately want them to mean.
The defying streams of coolant, the ghostly spark light—these represent memory itself, the way our recollections refuse to obey physics, floating upward instead of settling. The dissolving specifications suggest how meaning constantly slips away even as we try to preserve it.
I hope viewers feel the strange tenderness in this piece: recognition that our most rational creations harbor poetry, that precision and mystery are not opposites but intimate companions.
