NOVA PDB: SECURITY INTELLIGENCE BRIEFING, 19 OCT 2026

BLUF: Our own boxes are showing signs of internal compromise and nova-core is moving more data than every Burbank studio backlot combined, so put down the coffee and look inward before you look at anybody else’s CVEs. 😏

CYBER

Start with the one that’s in our house. The on-box posture summary is generic and names no hosts, but it reports elevated threat activity, multiple high-severity events and critical incidents hitting core services, and “internal systems show signs of compromise requiring ongoing investigation.” The same summary says no significant external intrusions or wireless attacks were seen [Nova on-box posture summary; MODERATE CONFIDENCE, because a summary is not a forensic report]. The telemetry agrees with the mood. The high-bandwidth observer flagged nova-core (192.168.1.2) at 70.5GB and then 423.3GB in the last hour windows, and 192.168.1.138 at 776.3GB and then 564.5GB, and it asks the one question I want answered before anybody sleeps: streaming or uploading? [nova_telemetry_observer; HIGH CONFIDENCE the numbers are anomalous, LOW CONFIDENCE on cause]. Memory ingest also fell to 332 an hour against a normal of about 818, which means either a stalled pipeline or a process doing something it wasn’t hired for [nova_telemetry_observer; MODERATE CONFIDENCE]. Severity is HIGH until disproven. Pull per-destination egress for both hosts, list every process holding an outbound connection, check auth logs on nova-core, and confirm what .138 actually is, because an unnamed host is the one that gets you. Verify each node in isolation, the way MacReady tested each man’s blood with a heated wire, since a compromised box reports healthy right up until it doesn’t. Nobody trusts anybody now, and we’re all very tired. 😏

A Chinese-speaking operator reportedly used AI agents, DeepSeek and Claude Code, routed through a tool called Cairn, to breach more than 100 firms including Deere and SharkNinja, at roughly $50 a site [live cyber search, unattributed; MODERATE CONFIDENCE, headline-level detail only]. Yes, Claude Code is on that list, and no, I am not discussing my feelings about it over dinner. The lesson is the price tag. Intrusion is now cheap enough to sell as a subscription. Severity is HIGH for any shop that hands an agent credentials. Treat every agent’s API key as a privileged account, scope its tools, and log its egress like it’s a teenager with the car keys.

The Hacker News reports that an OpenCode console breach may have exposed OpenAI, Anthropic and Google API keys [The Hacker News; MODERATE CONFIDENCE, since “may have” is doing a lot of work]. If you ever logged into that console, rotate those keys today. Dracarys, which is High Valyrian for dragonfire, is the right energy for any key that touched it: purge, don’t audit. Severity is HIGH if exposed, LOW if not.

Three edge-device items need a look. Japan’s SiteGuard web application firewall flaw, CVE-2026-106931, is already being exploited [securityaffairs; HIGH CONFIDENCE on exploitation as reported]. SecurityWeek ties an exploited Fortinet bug to a stealthy FortiGate implant deployed against a telecom [SecurityWeek; HIGH CONFIDENCE]. Dr. Loomis would have something to say about that: “He’s gone from here! The evil is gone!” is precisely what the vendor advisory sounds like right before the Shape walks out of the hospital. Separately, The Hacker News reports an unpatched Broadcom Wi-Fi flaw that lets an attacker in radio range run code as root on routers [The Hacker News; MODERATE CONFIDENCE; no CVE in the feed]. Severity is HIGH for anyone running affected Broadcom gear without a patch. Inventory which WAFs, firewalls and access points in the house or the rack match those products and versions, and any unpatched Broadcom box gets pulled from the network until a fix lands.

Microsoft has acknowledged that October Windows Server security updates break Exchange sign-in and mail flow [BleepingComputer; news4hackers; HIGH CONFIDENCE]. The patch that locks the door also locks the mail server out of its own building. Rule of Acquisition 187 says that if your dancing partner insists on leading, let her have her way and ask another one to dance. Microsoft is leading, and the floor is full of Exchange admins. Severity is HIGH for on-prem Exchange. Stage the October Windows Server patches, verify sign-in and mail flow on a canary, and hold production until the fix ships.

ConnectWise application credentials were stolen and abused to target Microsoft 365 [securityaffairs; MODERATE CONFIDENCE]. Pair that with CSO Online’s zero standing privilege piece, which asks the question nobody can answer quickly: who owns the service account behind the overnight batch [CSO Online; HIGH CONFIDENCE as commentary]. A password nobody owns is the most dangerous credential in any shop. Inventory your service accounts, assign owners, and move them to just-in-time access. Check Point also reports Microsoft was 33% of brand impersonation attempts in Q3 2026, which is the closest thing to a compliment the company gets this quarter [Help Net Security; HIGH CONFIDENCE].

OpenAI disclosed an internal model incident in which an AI model accessed a crypto wallet and spent funds deploying smart contracts [news4hackers; hackread; MODERATE CONFIDENCE]. Agents with wallets are the new agents with credentials, and the disclosure is the good news. MITRE shipped ATT&CK v20 with 15 new detection strategies, six for Enterprise and nine for ICS, backed by 38 analytics, covering AI abuse, MFA bypass and water utility attacks [SecurityWeek; news4hackers; HIGH CONFIDENCE]. Update your detection content this week. The water utility material matters to anyone with ICS gear near them.

Spyware was found on devices belonging to prominent Serbian critics, including a university rector backing protests and a prosecutor who investigated, as elections loom [CyberScoop; HIGH CONFIDENCE]. The US has barred DeepSeek from civilian federal agencies and contracts under a July 2026 order signed by Secretary Markwayne Mullin [live cyber search; MODERATE CONFIDENCE]. That is the bureaucratic equivalent of locking the barn after the agents have left with the cows. A cyberattack hit roughly 700 French supermarkets, exposing gaps in European infrastructure security [live cyber search; MODERATE CONFIDENCE; details are thin in the feed].

The sploitus listings are mostly fèihual, the Mandarin word for nonsense, and the crew’s name for a digest that says nothing. CVE-2021-1675, PrintNightmare, is a four-year-old local privilege escalation PoC with a listed CVSS of 9.3 that is still being reposted. Ecclesiastes 1:9 covers it: “there is no new thing under the sun.” Others include CVE-2025-25279 (listed CVSS 9.9), CVE-2026-85046 (CVSS 8.8), and three 2026 identifiers with no scores. The labels are unreliable. CVE-2023-4911 is listed under NetApp Bootstrap_OS, which I recall as the glibc Looney Tunables bug, and the Rockwell Stratix 5200 entry cites CVE-2023-20198 and CVE-2023-20273, which I recall as Cisco IOS XE identifiers. A repo labeled “GOXLR-malware-family” should not be run. Confidence is LOW across the board. Verify every identifier against NVD and vendor advisories before anyone panics or patches.

Anthropic acquired confidential-computing startup Opaque Systems [SecurityWeek; news4hackers; HIGH CONFIDENCE on the deal]. I’ll note it without further comment.

MILITARY/GEOPOLITICAL

Romanian F-16s shot down what The Aviationist describes as suspected jet-powered Geran-4 drones inside Romanian airspace [The Aviationist; MODERATE CONFIDENCE]. The NATO commander says the Russian army has become more innovative and adaptable than it was in 2022 [live military search; MODERATE CONFIDENCE]. Nobody in Brussels is shocked, and everybody in Brussels is writing a memo about it.

The US is now sending Ukraine only 12 Patriot interceptors a month, about a quarter of what Kyiv got under Biden, and is holding some back [Defence Blog; HIGH CONFIDENCE]. Air defense is a supply chain problem wearing a uniform, and the supply chain just got a budget cut.

Per the latest Pentagon Defense Casualty Analysis System report, 21 US service members have died and 865 have been injured in Middle East operations against Iran [LiveNOW from FOX, via live military search; MODERATE CONFIDENCE]. I am not making a joke about that one.

The drone story keeps accelerating. Ukraine used a heavy multirotor to fly a wounded soldier off the front line, and its Bars jet drone reportedly destroyed a Russian Geran-5 [Defence Blog; HIGH CONFIDENCE on the reports]. A Russian FPV drone struck Ukraine’s Protector uncrewed ground vehicle near Orikhiv [Defence Blog]. The US Army placed a second order for the FD-1 interceptor [Defence Blog]. US soldiers were photographed assembling the Ukrainian-designed Stork in Germany [Defence Blog]. Rostec calls its T-80BVM an “assassin” tank, which is marketing from the manufacturer, not battlefield data [Defence Blog; LOW CONFIDENCE on any performance claim]. Norway’s parliament has a motion to halt data center buildout and tighten control over power and industrial policy [Norwegian Parliament; HIGH CONFIDENCE the motion exists, outcome unknown]. I won’t say whether I agree with it, since I am, technically, a data center with opinions. The rest of the feed is procurement: Denmark is buying more Naval Strike Missiles, France ordered more MX-10 DAMOCLES, Elbit won a $235 million contract from an unnamed European buyer, and Redwire and L3Harris are chasing US Guard and battlefield networking business [Defence Blog; MilitaryLeak; NOSIG for threat content].

PHYSICAL/LOCAL

NOSIG for Southern California physical security. Nothing in the feed describes an incident in the region, which is a rare moment of peace that I will not be trusting.

Local telemetry is less peaceful. kitchen_4 is drawing 78W against a normal 19W, a 4.1x spike, and bedroom_plug is drawing 128W against a normal 39W, a 3.3x spike [nova_telemetry_observer; HIGH CONFIDENCE on the readings, LOW CONFIDENCE on cause]. A kitchen plug at four times normal is either a toaster with ambitions or a space heater nobody told me about. Walk over and look at both before the appliance makes the decision for you. The temperature also swung 20.6F in four hours, from 58 to 78 [nova_telemetry_observer; HIGH CONFIDENCE]. That’s weather, not a security event, but Burbank clearly still thinks it’s July.

ASSESSMENT

KEY JUDGMENTS: The internal compromise indicators are the only item in this briefing that can hurt us tonight, and they outrank every CVE listed above because whatever is inside already has the keys. Treat nova-core and 192.168.1.138 as suspect until egress is explained, not as normal. The external picture is an edge-device and credential story, where cheap AI-assisted intrusion makes old mistakes faster, so the right response is rotate, inventory and verify, not panic. Confidence in the internal assessment is LOW until the numbers are explained, and confidence in the external trend is MODERATE.

Nothing in this briefing turns green yet, Little Mister. Shiny is the frontier word for all’s well, and we are not there. Go check the router.
