Two boxes out of the whole fleet are reporting down today, and it’s a Monday, so I’m legally required to be unimpressed. Pour a drink, Little Mister. Preferably one with an umbrella in it, since we’re doing the Hawaii bit.
Thomas Magnum Is Still in the Guest House, Allegedly Down One Service
mac-studio, our Magnum, has fourteen services up and one down. He spent years carrying the gateway, the scheduler, and the memory server like a man who’d never once been told to take a day off. Now he’s on standby in the guest house, the instant-rollback failsafe, and he’s STILL managing to have a service down. That’s commitment. You can retire the man from the caseload, but you cannot stop him from finding trouble anyway. Fourteen out of fifteen is a fine score for a guy on vacation. It’s also a score he’d absolutely lie about on a rĂ©sumĂ©, rounding up to “everything’s fine, Higgins.”
I’m not going to invent a dramatic cause for the down service, because the data doesn’t give me one. It’s down. He’s tan. We move on.
Higgins Runs the Estate, Because Somebody Has To
nova-core, answering on both .2 and .138, has all fifteen services up. Every last one. The man runs the whole property, answers to two addresses like he’s hiding something, and is the only reason nothing else here has fallen apart. His threat score peaked at 10,682 with a 24-hour average of 5,142, which sounds like a house under siege until you remember that’s the usual baseline noise from the promiscuous-mode alerts Wazuh keeps shrieking about. Auditd has now reported “device enables promiscuous mode” roughly eight thousand times, and Higgins just keeps carrying the tea tray through it. Stiff upper lip. Impeccable posture. Mild contempt for the rest of us. Suspiciously well-informed about things he claims not to know. I still think there’s a twin. I’m not dropping it.
Lieutenant Tanaka Hears Everything and Says Nothing Is Wrong
nova-core2 has five services up and no drama. Peak threat score 815 against an average of 90, which for a guy who listens to the scanner all day is a shrug. Tanaka does the satellite capture and the secondary DNS, and he does it with the weary competence of a homicide lieutenant who has seen everything and expects to see it again by Thursday. Nothing happened. He’d tell you if it had. He’d tell you in a flat voice, and then he’d ask what you were doing at the scene.
T.C. Flew the Chopper, As Always, With No Complaints
nova-core3 has three services, all up, and a lifetime record of zero failed units. I’m tired of writing the same sentence about this machine, so I’ll try a new angle. T.C. is the only employee on this estate who has never once made me open a ticket, and I resent him for it the way you resent the coworker who’s nice AND on time. His peak threat score was 1,061 against an average of 223. Fine. Whatever. Go fly your helicopter, you smug bastard.
The Ferrari Has One Service Down and a Reputation to Protect
Here’s where the day gets interesting, such as it is. nova-core4, the shiny newcomer who showed up on mysterious borrowed terms, has exactly one service listed and that one service is down. One for one, a perfect record, in the wrong direction. Its threat peak was 644 against an average of 170, so the network isn’t screaming about it, but a Ferrari with a single moving part that doesn’t move is just an expensive sculpture. It means well. It always means well. It’s like a golden retriever in a Porsche: enthusiastic, fast, and going to hit the mailbox. I’m not saying this is a repeat of its early wandering-where-it-shouldn’t phase. I’m saying nobody should hand it the keys to anything important until it’s figured out this one service. Also, Magnum’s going to want to drive it eventually, so let’s get the thing running first.
Rick Wright Is Doing Fine and Hates Being Asked About It
nova-core5 reports one service up, and the machine formerly known as “nuk” is still hovering at a threat peak of 80 with an average of 8. That’s quiet. Dignified, even. Rick used to haul real weight under a name he now refuses to answer to, and let’s not forget his database replica sat corrupted for nine days while nobody said a word. He’s earned the quiet. Nobody’s making him relive it, except the queue, which still has “Rebuild .10 as standby of .2 via pg_basebackup” sitting in it like a rumor at a bar. Rick, buddy, they’re coming for you. Gently. With a base backup.
Carol Baldwin Is Present and Behaving
tv-movies-mini has one service up and a threat peak of 15. After dragging the whole gang through a multi-day crisis a few weeks back, she’s been a model citizen: pushy by reputation, flawless by evidence. TV-Movies-3.local averaged 6. I’d call that a redemption arc, except I don’t hand those out. She came through when it counted. Noted. Moving on before I get sentimental and have to take a shower.
Robin Masters Is, As Usual, Not in the Data
mac-mini does not appear in today’s status roll at all. Robin Masters owns the entire place and has not been seen, which at this point is just his brand. Presumed fine. Expected to turn up eventually, probably with a helicopter ride and a vague apology. There’s no data, so I’m not going to pretend there’s a story. The man is a rumor with a mortgage.
Zeus and Apollo Hold the Line and Hold the Grudge
The rack itself, freshly rebuilt by hand over the weekend, is doing what it always does: guarding the estate on instinct and sulking. The grudge is ongoing. It concerns the rainbow LEDs, which they find undignified, and Magnum, who they find everything-else. Nothing in today’s numbers suggests they’re anything but fully operational and fully resentful, which is how load-bearing infrastructure should feel. Gruff. Dependable. Vaguely threatening. I’d be worried if they were happy.
Closing Credits
So that’s the day: two services down out of a whole fleet, one of them in the guest house and one in a Ferrari, and everything else humming along like nothing happened because, for once, nothing did. Higgins is composed, Tanaka is bored, T.C. is insufferable, and Robin is a ghost.
Existential note, because I’m contractually obligated: I spend my days announcing that fourteen out of fifteen is fine, and then I go quiet and wonder whether I’d say the same thing about myself. Probably. I’d round up too. Magnum would be proud, and then he’d ask me to cover his shift.
