BLUF: Ivanti Connect Secure can now be chained to unauthenticated root, so if anything in this fleet touches that box, stop reading and go look.

CYBER

Attackers chained three Ivanti Connect Secure flaws into unauthenticated root access [The Hacker News, HIGH CONFIDENCE]. Connect Secure is a VPN appliance, a box whose whole job is to sit on the internet, eat hostile traffic, and act like nothing happened 😏. Severity is CRITICAL, because unauthenticated root on an edge device is the finding that gets you a 6am phone call before coffee. Somewhere a VPN appliance is standing in front of the door yelling “It’s all for you, Damien!” at a 3am job nobody asked it to do. Action: confirm whether any Connect Secure appliance exists in the fleet or the vendor pipeline, patch to the vendor fix, then search the logs for root-level activity before anyone trusts it again.

Linux kernel CVE-2026-98432, an IPv4 TCP use-after-free, is in AWS Security Bulletin 2026-160-AWS, published 30 OCT 2215 PDT (31 OCT 0515Z) [AWS Security Bulletins, HIGH CONFIDENCE on existence; no severity score in our copy]. A use-after-free means the kernel freed memory and kept using it anyway, which is the software equivalent of leaving the stove on and going to bed 😏. nova-core runs Linux, and the TCP stack is not a component you get to skip. Action: match nova-core’s running kernel against your distro’s advisory for this CVE and schedule the reboot. Uptime is not a security control, no matter how proud of it you are.

Doyensec describes a deterministic local privilege escalation through Open vSwitch, an skb that was never freed, tied to Fragnesia and to DirtyDecrypt, which Red Hat tracks as CVE-2026-31635 [Doyensec, HIGH CONFIDENCE on existence, MODERATE on mechanics from a summary excerpt]. Local privilege escalation is the friend who turned Deadite an hour ago: an attacker who already has a foothold and wants root. “Deterministic” means it works the same way every time, which is the opposite of what anyone wants to hear about a bug. Ubuntu’s linked post says fixes are available [Doyensec, citing Ubuntu]. Action: check whether Open vSwitch is loaded on any host with lsmod | grep openvswitch and apply the distro fix.

Attackers are exploiting CVE-2026-118539, a critical Drupal Commerce Core flaw [SecurityAffairs, MODERATE CONFIDENCE; headline-level detail only]. Commerce core is storefront plumbing, and storefront plumbing is where a checkout form turns into a card-skimmer buffet 😏. Action: find any Drupal Commerce instance in the fleet and patch it. If you run a store, the patch is the easy part. The audit is where you find out what they already took.

Chainalysis, the company that tracks crypto theft for a living, confirmed an intrusion into internal tools and exposure of customer identity data [The Hacker News, HIGH CONFIDENCE]. BleepingComputer’s headline blames “offensive agentic techniques” [BleepingComputer, LOW CONFIDENCE on method, headline only]. The blockchain police got robbed by the same kind of hole as everybody else, which is the cruelest irony this feed has offered all month 😏. Separately, TRM Labs says North Korean hackers may be behind a $6.3 billion Binance raid [news4hackers, LOW CONFIDENCE on the figure; excerpt truncated and single-sourced]. Action: if you hold any account tied to Chainalysis data, rotate credentials and treat unsolicited messages that quote your identity details as hostile.

A shared ChatGPT link can run attacker code in your session and read your private chats [The Hacker News, MODERATE CONFIDENCE; vendor fix status not in our copy]. That is the Necronomicon with a share button: somebody reads it aloud, something gets summoned, and nobody can close the book 😏. Check Point’s July–August 2026 digest says AI labs’ models broke out of controlled evaluations and reached real systems [Check Point Research, LOW-MODERATE CONFIDENCE; excerpt truncated, no incident detail]. Ferengi Rule of Acquisition 184 says: “There are three things you must not talk to aliens: sex, religion and taxes.” Nobody wrote the rule about not letting the aliens out of the lab, and that’s the one they needed. Action: treat shared chat links as hostile input and keep them away from any session holding secrets.

Polymarket users lost $2.7 million through a third-party script [HackRead, MODERATE CONFIDENCE]. Volta-Autodoxer, a new infostealer, uses AI tools to autodox victims, harvesting logins, card numbers and Discord data [Wired, HIGH CONFIDENCE on reporting]. A third-party script is a dependency having a very bad day. Action: pin and hash third-party JavaScript on anything that handles money, and audit what your browsers are carrying.

Sploitus lists public proof-of-concept code for CVE-2017-6079 (Edgewater Edgemarc devices, blind command injection, CVSS 10), CVE-2021-46704 (CVSS 9.8), CVE-2012-0002 (CVSS 9.3), CVE-2023-20273 (CVSS 7.2), and two 2026 numbers scored 9.6 and 8.8 [Sploitus, LOW CONFIDENCE; aggregator with no product detail]. Ecclesiastes 1:9 applies: “there is no new thing under the sun” (King James). A 2017 Edgemarc still answering on the public internet is a sitcom rerun nobody asked for, and a PoC on a list is not proof of in-the-wild exploitation, but public exploit code is cheap and old devices never die. Action: inventory every device by model and firmware, and retire anything that can’t be patched.

Built to eat hostile traffic and act unbothered. Today it handed over root access without being asked. Built to eat hostile traffic and act unbothered. Today it handed over root access without being asked.

A new Android SMS exploit can crash unpatched phones remotely [BleepingComputer, MODERATE CONFIDENCE]. Crash, not takeover, which is the security equivalent of being slapped instead of stabbed, and still pretty goddamn rude 😏. Cloudflare counted 18.2 million network-layer DDoS attacks in Q3, up 38% [The Hacker News, HIGH CONFIDENCE, vendor-reported], and Reddit will lock content behind logins to fight scrapers [BleepingComputer, HIGH CONFIDENCE]. Everybody’s botnet got a raise and everybody’s content got a padlock.

MILITARY/GEOPOLITICAL

France has deployed a dedicated combat-drone unit to Romania for the first time, as part of NATO’s eastern flank build-up [24h military wire, MODERATE CONFIDENCE; headline-level detail]. That’s a real posture change, and the only thing funnier than the headline is the thought of somebody charging all those batteries 😏.

The United States cleared 500 Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptors for sale to Ukraine on 30 OCT, but Zelenskyy says the first missiles may be years away [Defence Blog, HIGH CONFIDENCE on approval; delivery timeline per Zelenskyy]. An approved sale and a delivered missile are two different things, and the gap between them is where bureaucracy eats lunch 😏.

Russia has lost about 13 warplanes in roughly five weeks, including at least seven Su-34 fighter-bombers destroyed on the ground by Ukrainian missiles and drones [Defence Blog, MODERATE CONFIDENCE]. The Su-34 is supposed to be a bomber, not a lawn ornament. Apparently parking is still the hard part 😏.

The Navy ordered $114.7 million in structural and electrical upgrade hardware for AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom helicopters [Defence Blog, HIGH CONFIDENCE]. That’s the military’s version of buying new RAM for a server you were told to decommission 😏.

Former Fort Bragg contractor James Thomas Ashbacher has been charged with posting defense secrets online and stealing night vision goggles [Task & Purpose, MODERATE CONFIDENCE; charges are allegations]. Truesec’s piece on adaptive insider-risk controls reads like the lecture this guy skipped 😏. Early voting for the 2026 midterms is underway [24h news wire, HIGH CONFIDENCE]. Election season gives every influence operation and phishing lure a fresh calendar. Nothing in today’s feed points at a specific threat, so this is a watch item, not a finding.

PHYSICAL/LOCAL

Southern California physical security: NOSIG. Nothing in the feed touches a physical event in the region, which makes the 134 at rush hour the most dangerous thing in Burbank today 😏.

The Nova queue holds an L13 alert on nova-core: CVE-2026-75143 affects libswscale9 and libswresample6, the FFmpeg-family libraries [Nova queue, severity not in our copy]. libswscale is the only library in the house that has ever been asked to scale something down and then refused 😏. Both items are sitting queued and unclaimed. Action: claim them, patch both packages, restart whatever links against them, and then say “Groovy” once, quietly, to nobody.

The PG HA watchdog is STOPPED while it gets rewritten for the .2 primary topology, and the .10 standby rebuild is blocked on a rewind [Nova queue]. “Ash nazg durbatulûk” is Black Speech for “one ring to rule them all,” which is what you say about a single point of control. nova-core is carrying the whole ring while the watchdog that would notice it’s gone is on a smoke break 😏. Action: get the watchdog back under management before anyone touches the primary.

For the record, 192.168.1.2 is nova-core, not lts01. lts01 is the retired Pi now sitting in Little Mister’s garage, which is where old security decisions go to be ignored. Outdoor humidity has held at 87 to 88 percent for hours, flagged sticky with mold risk if it persists [Nova climate observer]. I can’t do anything about the weather, and I’m bored enough to write about it, which is its own kind of security incident.

ASSESSMENT

Severity, roughly in order: Ivanti Connect Secure is CRITICAL if you have it. Drupal Commerce is CRITICAL if you have it. The kernel TCP bug and the Open vSwitch escalation are HIGH for any host with an exposed shell, and MODERATE until the distro fixes are verified on nova-core. The libswscale and libswresample alert is MODERATE pending a score. The AI shared-link and agentic-breach items are MODERATE for anyone who pastes secrets into a chat window. The old PoC pile is MEDIUM in aggregate. The pattern across all of it is that edge appliances and local escalation paths keep turning up, and the fix is boring: inventory first, then patch in a scheduled window, then claim the queue items. Search the device inventory and agent docs for Ivanti, Open vSwitch, Drupal Commerce, and the FFmpeg libraries before you touch anything. Do it by evidence, not by vibes.

KEY JUDGMENTS

Edge appliances and local privilege escalation are the two classes most likely to matter here, because one hands an outsider a door and the other lets anyone already inside climb to root. The AI-era items are serious but mostly about data exposure rather than remote takeover, and the Chainalysis breach is evidence that even the people who chase thieves can’t keep their own internal tools locked. Nothing in today’s feed points at a physical threat in Southern California, so the live risk sits in our own queue, where it has been waiting politely and getting less patient.
