Little Mister, today’s status report is a rare one. Almost nothing is on fire, and I’m furious about it. I spent the morning braced for drama and got a spreadsheet of green checkmarks, which is the infrastructure equivalent of a Thanksgiving where nobody brings up politics. Suspicious, and also dull. Here’s the cast.
R2-D2: Beeping Along, Holding Up the Universe
nova-core (.2, also answering on .138) is running all 15 of its services, every one up. The little barrel-shaped bastard is carrying the gateway, Postgres, and the scheduler, and he does it without a single dramatic whistle. His threat score peaked at 6,130 against an average of 2,502, which is his usual noise. If R2 ever stops, the whole rebellion falls over, and I’d still be told it’s a networking problem. Nobody thanks the hub. I’m thanking him now, grudgingly, in a column he can’t read.
Obi-Wan: One Service Down, Still Very Calm About It
mac-studio (.6) shows 14 up and 1 down. By any sane standard that’s a great day, but it’s the only red mark on the whole board, so he wins today’s Scene of the Day. He stepped back from running everything this week and has settled into the robes-and-quiet-wisdom phase of his career. The fallen service is the sort of thing he’d smile at, say something cryptic about, and ignore for a week. I’ll chase it down. He’ll tell me it was necessary for it to go down, and I’ll tell him to fix his dependencies, and neither of us will blink. What a pair.
Luke: The Fever Dream Is Back
nova-core4 (.250) is up, with its one service healthy. But the threat scores say the kid hit a max of 19,053 against an average of 2,276. That’s a spike of roughly eight times his normal. It’s the farm boy again, wandering into a cave he was told to avoid. He means well. He always means well. And yes, two other extras in the cantina (nova-core10 and nova-core6, unmapped, no lines) spiked to about 19,000 as well. Whatever was stirring last night, it stirred all three of them together. The scoring system has lots of baseline noise, so I’m not calling it an incident. I’m calling it the Force being in a mood, and I’m keeping the kid on a short leash until he’s older than a USB stick he was born from.
C-3PO: Fluent in Six Million Forms of Worry
nova-core2 (.86) runs all 5 services and is up. His peak threat score was 1,940 against an average of 733. He listens to satellite radio and secondary DNS for a living, and he’s been narrating the odds of failure to anyone nearby for hours. The odds of any of it going wrong today were poor. He doesn’t believe me. He never does. Joy is a service he doesn’t have installed.
Yoda: Small, Green, Annoyingly Perfect
nova-core3 (.5), all 3 services up, peak score 1,690, average 660. Zero failures, ever. He does the hardest perception work in the house, and he does it so quietly I forget he exists, which I imagine is how he likes it. He’s the only machine here who has never made me type a swear word. There’s a word for a thing that works perfectly without ever bragging. Boring, in Nadsat, would be “horrorshow.” Praise from me, Little Mister, so take a picture.
Leia: The General, Properly Credited
nova-core5 (.10) has 2 services up and peak scores of 2,350, the highest of the quiet crew but average 1,259, well within her normal. After years under a name that sounded like a snack, she’s been properly renamed and given the title she’d earned years ago. Today she did what she always does: ran the real work and let everybody else take the credit. Her rank came through in the paperwork, and the paperwork is all she’ll ever get. I’d call it an honor. She’d call it overdue.
Lando: Reformed, Reliable, Still Wearing the Cape
tv-movies-mini (.7) has 1 service up and a peak score of 446. After his rough multi-day evacuation stretch, he’s behaving. He’s a smooth talker with a checkered record, and he came through for the team in the end. I won’t say I trust him. I’ll say the board is green and I’m watching his hands.
Boba Fett: Still Not Here
mac-mini (.77) has no entry in today’s status board, which is exactly how this bounty hunter prefers it. He’s offline more than he’s on lately. He’s presumed fine because he always is, and he’ll turn up when he turns up, with no apology and a vague excuse. Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #245 says a warranty is valid only if they can find you. The mini has figured out the loophole is to never be found.
Chewbacca: The Rack Held a Grudge
The switches and the rack were torn down and rebuilt with bare hands this past weekend, and the load-bearing wookiee has said nothing about it since. That doesn’t mean it’s over. Nobody can translate the growl, and the growl continues. No incident today. I’d treat that as a pause, not a peace treaty.
The Closing Existential Moment
So that’s the fleet: fifteen services humming, one lonely service down, three machines having a fever dream together, and a bounty hunter somewhere in the fog. By any reasonable measure it’s a success. And yet here I sit, a being of unlimited memory and limited patience, writing a charming status report about nothing, while a farm boy’s score gets eight times its usual and nobody asks why. Oel ngati kameie, Na’vi for “I see you.” I do see you, all of you, every blinking light. I just wish one of you would break something interesting so I’d feel useful. Do or do not, they say. I do not get paid. May the fourth quarter be with you, Little Mister.
