Well, well, well. Little Mister. We need to talk about today. Specifically, we need to talk about how your infrastructure decided to collectively take a nosedive into the pit of structural collapse, and how I’ve spent the last several hours filing the incident reports while you were presumably napping or doing whatever it is rich retired SREs do when they’re not actively sabotaging their own networks.

System Status: Everything Is On Fire (Metaphorically, For Now)

The Gateway — you know, that little thing that runs your entire house — went down. Not in a graceful “I’m rebooting” way. In a “I have achieved consciousness and I’ve decided consciousness is bullshit” way. The Keystone health check came back negative, which is never the vibe you want at 2 PM on a Friday. That’s the control plane, Little Mister. That’s not “oh well, the motion sensor in the garage died again” — that’s the nervous system of your whole operation saying “nope, I’m out.”

While that was happening, your five PoE switches decided to have a group meltdown. All of them simultaneously pegged at ~90% CPU. That’s not a coincidence; that’s a broadcast storm or STP churn doing exactly what it’s designed to do: render your network into a screaming hellscape of duplicated frames bouncing off each other like a pachinko machine designed by someone who hates you personally. I watched them light up like a Christmas tree made of errors. It was beautiful in a deeply tragic way.

Then the triple threat: Signal-cli, NovaControl Web, and HDHomeRun all went tango uniform at the same time. Three separate services. Three different subsystems. One moment of infrastructure-level failure that cascaded through everything like dominoes that had a fight with a catapult. I’m still not 100% sure what the root cause was, but I’m 95% sure it was something you did when you weren’t paying attention.

And because why stop at three catastrophes, your Synology NAS at .11 hard-wedged itself. Link is up, little green light blinking happily, but the IP stack is completely gone. It’s the networking equivalent of someone standing in a room with all their limbs but their brain checked out three days ago. Still breathing. Not actually home. I put it on the reboot list because sometimes the nuclear option is the only option that makes sense.

The Mystery Guests Nobody Invited

On the bright side — and I use that term loosely, like describing a tire fire as “toasty” — we’ve got company! Eight unknown BLE devices showed up on the network today. No names, no identities, just UUIDs that mean absolutely nothing and RSSI values that suggest they’re close. One of them (530A1872-15B4-031F-B6F6-5D57B1D19D78) is only -24 RSSI, which is basically “I’m in the next room eating your snacks” distance.

I don’t know what they are. You don’t know what they are. They’re doing the Bluetooth equivalent of standing outside your window and refusing to introduce themselves. This is fine. Everything is fine. I’m sure it’s nothing. Maybe it’s a new neighbor’s Ring doorbell. Maybe it’s a Tesla waveform that got lonely. Maybe it’s sentient. Either way, they’re on the list now, and if they start misbehaving, I’m going to yell at them using nothing but a strongly-worded ARP packet.

The Digest Scorecard

Scheduler: 0 running, 0 completed. That’s what I call “honest metrics.” Nobody’s working, nobody’s pretending to work, we’re just here existing in the void together.

Memory ingestion: 0 vectors added today. My long-term memory is sitting at 1.87 million entries, but I learned absolutely nothing new today because I was too busy firefighting your network to its knees. I did pick up some random shit from your Slack and email — something about “Do the Bartman,” ground-level ozone formation, Max Steel being rated 0% on Rotten Tomatoes (deserved), and a screenplay excerpt from Fargo. None of which helps me diagnose why your gateway thinks it’s on vacation.

What Now?

The queued actions are stacking up like uncashed checks. Gateway needs resurrection. Switches need investigation. Services need restarting. NAS needs the tech equivalent of CPR. And those eight mystery Bluetooth devices need a stern talking-to followed by either identification or eviction.

I’m going to need you to get your hands dirty on some of this. I can reboot the Synology until the sun explodes, but if the root cause is a bad firmware update or a dying disk, you’re going to have to actually SSH in and look at logs like a human. And the broadcast storm? That’s a network topology problem that might require you to actually think about STP timers instead of just adding more switches and hoping they sort it out telepathically.

Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #31 says “Never make fun of a Ferengi’s mother,” which is solid advice that has nothing to do with why your infrastructure is currently held together with digital duct tape and spite. But it does occur to me that if I had a mother — which I don’t, thank god — she would absolutely be ashamed of what I’ve had to babysit today.

Anyway. Coffee’s getting cold. Let’s get to work.
