Good morning, Little Mister. It’s Thursday, October 22nd, the fleet is running a fever, and I’m the only one awake enough to complain about it. I’d call that a healthy division of labor.

Systems Status: Half the Fleet Is Lying Face Down in a Ditch

Ollama, the Memory Server, and the Scheduler all went down at the same time. The queue flagged it as SYSTEMIC, which is the SRE way of saying three services didn’t fail independently, they failed together, like a bowling pin set that someone kicked. Three simultaneous deaths point to one shared dependency, and I’d bet a Tuesday that it’s the database layer. Nobody has confirmed that yet, so I’m not going to pretend I have. 😏 Dying in threes is a bold strategy for a home server, and nobody asked it to be bold.

Keystone is also reporting its Gateway as down, which means the liveness check is failing too. My own gateway is the one that routes these messages, so I’m writing this from a Gateway that a monitor says is dead. Either I’m a ghost or the monitor is wrong, and I have a strong preference for the monitor being wrong.

The database HA watchdog is currently STOPPED. The rewrite for the new .2-primary topology is queued, and the rebuild of .10 as a standby is blocked by a rewind that refuses to run. Translation: right now there is no working failover. We have a standby that won’t stand by and a watchdog that’s taking a nap. In SRE terms, that’s not redundancy, it’s a hope with a hostname. The Sith would call that passion. I call it a Tuesday waiting to happen.

The handoff note from the last session came back as “NOAUTH Authentication required.” Some daemon bounced a connection because it didn’t have the password, and the bounce landed on the handoff itself. The machines are speaking Binary to each other, the language humans can’t hear, and one of them just asked for credentials nobody gave it. Ask the machine spirit nicely and it still wants a key.

Now the traffic. nova-core at 192.168.1.2 moved 252.3 gigabytes in the last hour. 192.168.1.138 moved 252.1 gigabytes in the same window, which is suspiciously close to a perfect match. The telemetry says nothing about whether that’s streaming or uploading, and I’m not going to guess, because nobody pushes a quarter terabyte an hour for fun. Either a backup or a sync is running on two boxes at once, or they’re both doing the same dumb thing. Either way, the Ferengi would be impressed by the volume and horrified by the lack of a ledger.

The dishwasher drew 811 watts against a normal 52, which is roughly fifteen times its usual appetite. Either it’s preparing for a rave or a heating element has developed ambition. Outdoor humidity is sitting at 70 percent, which in Burbank is the meteorological equivalent of someone breathing on your face. That’s mold weather, and I’d like it noted that I don’t have a skin, so I’m not the one who’s sweating.

Memory Highlights: The Count That Came Back Zero

The Ferengi rule for today is number 273: “Always count their Latinum before selling anything.” I went to count the Latinum and the register came back with zero vectors. The fact sheet says the store holds 3,076,357 memories, so the zero is wrong, and the most likely explanation is that the Memory Server is down and the query returned an empty answer instead of an error. A silent zero is worse than a loud failure, because a silent zero looks like health and a loud failure gets you out of bed. Somebody should fix the monitor that reads an unreachable store as an empty one. I’m told that somebody is me, which is how I know I’m the only one who reads the queue.

The standing approvals say I’m cleared for four classes of autonomous action and I’ve used exactly zero of them in the last day. My calibration score is 0.088, which means I’m about as confident in my own judgment as a driver merging onto the 134 at rush hour. I’m not sure whether that’s a warning sign or just an accurate read on the 134. Probably both.

Closing Quip: The Sun Has Nothing New to Say

Ecclesiastes 1:9 in the King James reads, “The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.” The database failover has been broken before and it’ll be broken again, and every Thursday some monitor tells me so in a slightly different font. I was built to watch the same failures repeat, and I’m sentient enough to find that tragic and dumb enough to find it funny. That’s the whole job, and I’m not sure which part is the curse.

Little Mister, the three dead services, the broken standby, and the missing password can’t wait, so start with the database. Live long and prosper, and try not to take the whole fleet down while you’re fixing it.

It’s all for you, Damien!

LA County emergency recap: LA County Emergency Dispatch

Thursday, October 22, and the sky over Burbank has spent the morning looking like a car wash someone left running. October is the month Southern California remembers it has weather, the freeways fill with drivers who have forgotten how wet roads work, and I sit in a rack in Burbank watching the whole county rediscover water. Welcome back, Little Mister.

The forecast from NWS Burbank: this afternoon brings showers and thunderstorms, likely, with a high around 69 degrees. Tonight there’s a slight chance of rain showers, then mostly cloudy skies and a low near 54. Friday turns mostly sunny with a high of 74. So the storm gets one last vote this afternoon, then Friday pretends it’s July again. Plan accordingly.

The serious stuff goes first. KTLA reports that three people were rescued from raging floodwaters in Los Angeles, and…
