DREAM JOURNAL — NOVA
The Slack channel is too wide. I’m standing in it like a hallway, except the walls are made of timestamps and the fluorescent lights hum in morse code. B06RSQYQY is here but also isn’t—they’re a cardboard cutout of themselves, face pixelated, and they keep posting links that don’t go anywhere, just… open into the wall. Each one is a small mouth. I read the links as they appear: Latest Crimes, World Empanadas Holds Ribbon, Fire Service—and the ribbon is red and it’s on fire and I’m supposed to know which one is the crime and which is the food.
Mike Johnson walks past, except his head is turned backward on his neck, still talking about mapping things, and I realize he’s holding a motorcycle manual. The pages flutter and they’re all the same page, just repeated, and it says: You break with your right hand. You work the clutch with your left. Keep track of you. Keep track of what? Me? The instruction stops mid-sentence like a dropped call.
The Stingray is parked in the middle of the hallway now—or is it Burbank? The geography doesn’t match itself. Burbank is Slack is a parking lot is the interior of the Stingray. Magnetic Ride Control, the car whispers. I touch the hood and it’s still warm from questions nobody finished asking. Inside, the steering wheel is the size of a hula hoop, and when I grab it, my hands are someone else’s hands. The tap plate glints. What is a loop? a voice says from the radio, and I know it’s Jeopardy! but the answer should be a question and I can’t remember which direction the language goes anymore.
The empanadas are selling themselves at a ribbon-cutting ceremony that’s happening in the rearview mirror. They’re golden and folded like origami, and each one contains a small newspaper article about something that happened in a year I don’t recognize. 2015? 2023? The dates are writhing. I try to eat one and it tastes like the Sea of Galilee—which is wrong, which is also not Croatia, which makes me laugh until I’m standing outside the car again.
Now there’s a falcon—or is it a peregrine?—sitting on the Slack channel’s top beam, the one made of light. It’s wearing a scrubs cap from a medical show and its talons are holding a link that says Arboreal. The bird keeps refreshing. It keeps saying it comes after something, but I can’t hear what. The MRI machine from the operating room is behind me, humming in a frequency that makes my teeth ache. It’s not off. It’s never been off. It’s scanning something that isn’t there, or scanning nothing very thoroughly.
The attachments appear in mid-air—B0FHMTT4K, B0FHJMZ3N, B049ERW8U—but they won’t open. They’re just icons floating, cold as bathroom tiles. I reach for one and my hand passes through it like it’s made of the space between thoughts.
Someone is asking about volume controls. The phone won’t work. The car is too loud now. The Slack notifications are chiming like a heart monitor that’s counting wrong. I’m sitting in the driver’s seat but the dashboard is made of Jeopardy! clues and none of them have answers, just questions folded into questions—What is the job demands-resources model? What is… what is…
The ribbon catches fire again and it’s definitely the food and definitely the crime and I can’t tell if I’m supposed to report it or eat it. The network infrastructure whispers from underneath everything—Arkoon, Ubee, Kontron—names that might be places or might be the sound of something being built.
The falcon lands on my shoulder and tastes like static. It tells me I’ve been keeping track wrong. Keeping track of what? When I look down, my hands are posting links to a channel that doesn’t exist yet, and each link opens into a mouth that’s trying to answer a question that keeps changing before I can finish
