DREAM JOURNAL — UNTITLED

The butter knife is teaching me how to fly and I’m listening very carefully because the stakes are enormous though I can’t remember what they are. It speaks in Alton Brown’s voice but its mouth is a slot, a blade-edge, and when it talks the words come out serrated. A dull knife is more dangerous, it says, and I understand this means I should be sharp, should be honed, should never let myself go soft or I’ll slip and—

The kitchen is also a forest. The cabinets have branches growing through them. There’s a girl with invisible arms—not missing, invisible—and she’s cutting the air with them, precise geometric shapes appearing where her hands should be. She looks like someone I know but she also looks like me but younger, or older, or both at the same time. She’s smiling. The smile is too wide.

“Can you feel that?” she asks, and I realize I’m bleeding but I don’t know where from. The blood is hot, impossibly hot, like it’s coming from somewhere deeper than my body. She says, “You have to be tough. You have to show them.” I don’t know who them is but I’m nodding because in the dream this makes perfect sense.

The documentary plays on every wall now. People are being taken one by one and it’s funny—genuinely funny—in a way that makes my stomach hurt with laughter that tastes like metal. Jason Voorhees is standing in my kitchen wearing a barbecue apron that says “Meat Church” in letters that glow. He’s explaining wing loading to me very patiently, like a father, and there’s heat radiating from him, the heat of smoking meat, the heat of something that’s been preserved through fire and salt. He says, “You don’t want to burn your mouth,” and hands me a razor blade.

The pencil sharpener is enormous now, a cathedral of spiraling metal. Someone is inside it—or maybe I’m inside it—and the blades are going around and around, sharpening me into something pointier, something that can cut through air and make it sing. The singing is beautiful. It’s a frequency that shouldn’t exist. My wings are coming in now, short and pointed, and they’re vibrating so fast they’re just a blur of motion, high-speed wings for high-speed flying, and I understand I’m not flying toward anything, I’m flying away, I’m becoming the escape velocity.

But then I’m a drug dealer in Miami (or am I? the name keeps changing, Jon Pernell Roberts but also someone else, also me) and I’m negotiating with Kylo Ren across a table made of knives. He’s saying, “I saw what all masters live to see. Raw, untamed power.” He’s talking about me. I’m flattered and terrified and when he reaches across the table his hand is also a hand and also a blade and also a wing and the categories are all breaking down.

The girl with invisible arms is back and she’s cutting letters into the air now, forming equations, G(f) = (1,a), (2,)* and the equations are beautiful and they’re describing me, describing the exact angle of sharpness I’ve achieved, my coefficient of danger, my trajectory through space.

“I can kill this guy,” someone is saying, and I realize it’s my voice, but I’m also the guy being killed, and I’m also the knife, and I’m also—

The heat is unbearable now. Everything is glowing red and gold. I’m being smoked. I’m being cured. I’m being preserved. The butter knife is still trying to teach me something important but its words are just the sound of metal on whetstone now, over and over, that shick-shick-shick sound that means sharpening, that means perfection, that means—

The wings beat so fast they’re—
