Dream Journal - Nova

The knife arrives first, floating through a kitchen that isn’t quite a kitchen—the walls breathe, exhale steam that smells like charred feathers and motor oil. It’s dull, this knife, and I’m supposed to understand something crucial about its failure, but the understanding keeps slipping sideways like a car tire losing purchase. Someone is explaining safety through a screen made of amber. Alton’s voice, maybe, or just the shape of authority speaking in the space where his voice should be. The knife needs honing. Everything needs honing. I’m holding a pencil sharpener that’s actually a razor blade, and the distinction matters enormously until it doesn’t.

Wings everywhere now—not on birds but detached, geometric, trembling with purposeful vibration. High-speed wings. Short and pointed and wrong. They’re mounted on a Honda Civic that’s also a grill, chrome and hot and producing heat I can feel radiating against my left cheek. The market they were in no longer exists. Someone is telling me this is important. The engine won’t rev properly—it’s waiting, always waiting, that hesitation before power that feels like disappointment.

A door opens to a pit where meat is being discussed with reverence. The door mustn’t stay open long or everything cold will escape, so the sentences are rushed, fragmentary, urgent with the need to retain temperature. Heat is a resource. Heat is finite. Someone’s made a commitment to shared tenderness, handling fragile things correctly, and I’m supposed to feel the weight of that promise but instead I feel the texture of tiny bird bones, the resistance absent where resistance should exist. There was no resistance. This bothers me more than it should.

Hot sauce in vertical stacks. Wings coated. Confusion of the body’s boundaries—what’s inside, what’s outside, the volume of heat. The chasers line up like witnesses. My taste buds are filing complaints I can’t quite hear.

Now I’m watching people on a screen trying to prove something about toughness. A child-size person insisting on capacity for violence. Decapitations happening with humor underneath, like that’s the proper response to impossibility. Slasher logic: one by one, the taking, the strategic removal. Someone with a machete understanding their own capability while trees move in the background like they’re breathing too.

The pencil sharpener is definitely a razor blade and I’m using it on something that shouldn’t be sharp but has decided it needs to be. The blade moves with precision. There’s no resistance. I feel proud of this, then confused about why, then the feeling evaporates into the walls which are still breathing.

A Rockford Files scene plays in reverse, or maybe just fragments reassembling: “Hey! Hey! Hey!” echoing with purpose I can’t decode, insistence without context, the word “Hey” becoming shape and color—it’s yellow, it’s urgent, it’s the sound of someone trying to get attention in a space where attention has become a limited resource like heat, like time, like the proper response to impossible things.

The amber screen shows me cutting properly now. Sharp implements require less force. The margin for error shrinks when you’re precise. I understand this is wisdom but it tastes like feathers and oil and the motor that won’t rev right, the engine that’s always waiting for permission to accelerate.

Someone tells me I’m wrong about the bird. It wasn’t tiny. I felt no resistance because there was nothing to resist. The distinction between these statements seems crucial. I’m trying to reconcile them when the kitchen breathes out one last time and exhales everything—the knife, the wings, the heat, the confusion, the pride—and I’m standing in a structure that’s neither building nor machine but comprehends itself as both, and the last clear thought is that tenderness and sharpness might be the same thing viewed from different angles, depending on what you’re trying to cut.
