We were all wearing numbers, but they kept changing
The parade had started before I arrived, which means I was never not inside it. That’s the only way to explain how the street was both behind me and beneath my feet, how the drums arrived in my chest before the marching band turned the corner. The sound was yellow — not the color yellow, but the shape of it, the geometry of trumpets learning to be loud in sequence. I could feel it on my teeth like pressure.
We were all wearing numbers. Mine was 1780 when I started paying attention, though I can’t remember pinning it on. Others wore 2007, wore fragments of words I almost recognized: CORVETTE, CLUB, YOUNG. A woman in front of me wore RECURSION in thick letters, and every time I blinked she was wearing something different — HOERNER, then THRESHOLD, then just a coat of dust that said nothing. Nobody minded. This was orderly chaos. This was how parades worked in places where time didn’t move in a line.
The street was warm. Not hot — warm the way skin is warm when you’ve been pressed against it for so long you forget it’s not your own temperature. The air had weight. It wasn’t heavy, but present, insistent, like something was leaning into the side of my face and had been for hours or years. I couldn’t turn to see what it was because turning would break the architecture of the moment, and the moment needed to stay intact.
A voice was broadcasting. I couldn’t locate it — not above, not beside, somewhere interior to the crowd’s motion. It was giving directions in a language that was mostly numbers and place names: “16th and Halloween, Jeffries, 8th, King Paul, 1-5-4,” over and over, a prayer in dispatch frequencies. The parade moved according to these instructions like we were all on strings from the same hand. I wanted to ask who was holding the strings. I didn’t have a mouth for asking.
Ahead of us, the street opened. It wasn’t opening like a door — it was opening like a mouth, like something had been waiting to speak and had decided now was the time. The opening was full of light, but the light didn’t come from anywhere. It was just there, occupying space, dense as material. Inside it, I could see shapes of other parades, other crowds, all wearing numbers that glowed faintly — future parades, or parades from inside time reversed, all moving toward us and through us simultaneously. We didn’t collide with them. We became them. This was permeable.
The heat intensified. Not uncomfortable, but felt — a proximity that had intention. Someone was very close to my left side now, close enough that I should have been able to name them, and they were humming something that matched the drum rhythm exactly. The sound was intimate. The parade had narrowed without shrinking. We were still hundreds of people wide, but the space between us had become frictionless. Shoulder to shoulder meant something different now. It meant knowing.
I couldn’t see the end of the street anymore. The parade had become the only space that existed, a ribbon of warm motion and numeric identities, and we were walking — no, being walked — toward something that was also walking toward us. The distance was closing in both directions. I could feel the moment where we would meet coming like a pressure in my sternum, like words I hadn’t learned the language to speak.
The numbers on our chests were changing faster now. I caught glimpses: CONTACT, YOUNG, MAGNITUDE, EVOLUTION. A man wore HALL OF FAME for three steps, then POSTHUMOUS, then just INDUCTED in letters that seemed to be written in something that was almost light. Everyone was reading everyone else’s numbers as we passed in the compressing crowd. This was communication. This was sex without touching, without shape, without the embarrassment of wanting something you couldn’t name.
And then the numbers stopped changing. I looked down at my chest and it said nothing — not blank, but finished, like the sentence had ended and the point had landed. Around me, everyone’s numbers had solidified too. We were all something final now, all wearing the completed things we’d been trying to say. The parade kept moving forward, but the motion had become internal. We were inside the parade now more than we had ever been, which is when I realized I’d always been still.
The street beneath us was singing, or we were hearing the street, or the distinction had begun to matter less with each step forward into the light that kept not arriving.
