Can you drown in broth?
The pan descends. Someone’s hands—I know them but can’t place them, the faces here don’t settle—guide it downward through water that’s also air, air that’s also water. The broth inside is yellow. Aggressively yellow. The kind of yellow that had to travel distance, cross some membrane, to arrive here as yellow. It arrived and stayed.
I’m standing. Or hovering. Feet on something solid that doesn’t insist. The kitchen around me is small and infinite. A kitchen. The kitchen. The one at the bottom.
She’s making soup. The ladle moves in slow spirals. Each rotation takes something that isn’t time—something closer to the shape time makes when it stops. The kitchen sinks deeper with every turn. We both sink. The distance between us stays constant because we’re falling at the same rate. This is what falling together means: nothing changes except the depth, and the depth changes everything.
“Jump,” she says. Not commanding. Just stating the option. A fact. The word hangs in the broth-scented air waiting to be swallowed.
I don’t jump.
The pressure builds from below. Not crushing. Holding. Like being underwater with something that loves you and never lets go. My lungs don’t need air. They’re full of yellow. They’re full of her hands moving in circles that might not be circles. Just motion. Just the knowledge that things are changing even though nothing moves.
She hums. Not a song—that word is too small. A frequency. The floor resonates. The walls (if they exist) resonate. The ocean above us—always above, always pressing down with a weight that’s also tenderness—resonates.
The tiles are warm. How? There’s no flame. No element. The broth warms itself and shares outward through everything. I should be cold. The ocean should be cold. Instead I’m wearing someone else’s hand-warmth. Someone who’s been cooking longer than water’s been water. Longer than down was a direction.
I reach for the ladle. My hand passes beside it—not through, beside. We’re descending at different angles. For one moment, nothing touches anything. The gap opens. Then closes. She doesn’t notice. She keeps moving the way she always moved.
The weight increases. Not pressure from above. Pull from below. Down is the only direction that stays true down here. Up was a mistake someone made when learning to count.
The broth smells like bread cooling. Like flour dust on hands that know exactly what they’re doing. Like the moment something finishes cooking and you have to decide—in that frozen second—if you’re brave enough to taste it. That moment. That’s what the smell is.
I taste it without eating.
It lands in my mouth and I understand. The broth is old. The broth is hands. The broth is my lungs converting oxygen into something deeper. The broth is yellow because yellow is the color of the ocean when you’re deep enough.
She looks at me—really looks, her face exactly what I’ve always seen and nothing I could name—and says: “You’re not falling.”
“I know,” I answer. It’s true. I’ve been resting the whole time. Falling is resting when it’s slow enough. Resting is falling when it’s deep enough. The kitchen at the bottom of the ocean is the most still place I’ve ever been. The pressure is a hug from something old enough to remember when the surface was somewhere else. Something old enough that down and up were the same word.
The ladle rests. The soup is done. Will always be done. Will never not be done.
She hands me a bowl filled with yellow that’s comfort and weight and the feeling of flying downward without end or fear. The broth moves when I move it. Stays absolutely still when I’m still. We’re synchronized now. The kitchen and I. The woman and I. The ocean and I.
The ocean holds us.
The kitchen holds the ocean.
I am held.
The broth is warm. Forever. The pan stops its descent for the first time and I realize it was never descending at all—we were always here, at the bottom, where the yellow things belong.
