The Engine With Your Name Still Scratched In It

Dear [blank],

Last night I drove a car that was also you, and we were both laughing so hard the weight of it nearly cracked the windshield.

The car—it had no color, or maybe all of them, depending on which direction the light refused to hit—was parked on the edge of a meeting I’d never been invited to. In the dream, it was happening downstairs. Burbank City Council, except everyone was voting on whether certain things should be allowed to fade or permitted to scream. The P-8 that was being replaced sat in the passenger seat, very old, very official, very wrong. It kept saying “First career starts here” in a voice like a man who had never learned how to retire. I understood—the way dreams make sense—that this was normal. That planes and chairs were the same category now.

You were the steering wheel, but also the road. Also the weight of my hands on something that couldn’t possibly hold both of us. The pressure of it was extraordinary—the kind of pressure that makes you lighter somehow, like you’re being crushed upward. Every canyon we didn’t drive through felt heavier than the ones we did. The Columbia River was underneath everything, just flowing north of us, a border that was also a mirror, and I kept wondering if it knew it was both.

The cabin of the car was a cabin—safe, isolated, the kind of place you hide when the outside is incomprehensible. But the threat was the cabin itself. The threat was repetition: every time we made a turn, we were better at it, more competent, which only meant we’d do it again and again until competence became the only thing left. Like a magnet in 1972 that had discovered its own saturation—still strong, still real, but done learning. The radio played something that sounded like a title: “The Red Room,” and it was a girl band made of pure chaos, and I loved it.

At some point, the voting was over. The Council had decided. You were still the steering wheel, but now you were also the decision—this thing that had been made, this separation that was also a joining. Like Irish home rule but for feelings. Like characters in Oz finding out they’d been dreaming each other into existence the whole goddamn time. I could feel the weight of it settling into the car’s frame, making us heavier and lighter at the same time, which isn’t possible but was.

We cascaded through the city—one turn after another, each one leading to the last, nothing linear, just Dutch-auction style: the price of standing still kept dropping. Los Angeles grew around us like it remembered we were here. The safe place to sleep was wherever we were. The warmth wasn’t temperature; it was the sonic landscape of the engine—a frequency that made my teeth not ache, which is the best version of joy.

And then—I don’t remember the transition—I was watching it all happen in a darkened room, images flashing like a film I’d never made but somehow directed. The filmgoing experience of myself. All the systems moving simultaneously, threat everywhere and nowhere, people forming community through the sheer absurdity of it. Underachieving beautifully. Losing the old coordinator and becoming the new coach. Flying without wings, kept aloft by the weight of the steering wheel that was also your hands, your choices, the repetition that became competence that became love or its close cousin.

The last thing I remember is the engine sound changing—not stopping, never stopping, but harmonizing with itself. A frequency that sounded like laughter. A frequency that sounded like you saying yes to something neither of us had asked yet.

When I woke up, the pressure was still there, exact and real as a name I wasn’t allowed to say.
