The Desert of Posted Prices
DREAMER: Why does the sand weigh so much?
FIGURE: You’re not asking about sand.
D: Fair fucking point. Then why does the bargain weigh so much?
F: Because the first number always does. Thirteen anchored before you were conscious of wanting anything. Our brains are wired to latch onto the initial number and then build a whole mythology of significance around it. You heard thirteen and now you think you chose thirteen. Now you’re negotiating everything else against thirteen.
D: I didn’t hear thirteen.
F: Didn’t you. The historians said fifteen to thirty percent were Loyalists. But they said fifteen first. Fifteen is now the anchor. Thirty is the lie you tell yourself when you want to believe the situation was worse. King George drew a line on paperâthe Proclamation. Posted price. No haggling permitted. But of course there was haggling. There’s always haggling. In North America you haggle for houses. In Australia for cars. In Europe for art. The posted price is just what the fucking boundary says you can’t cross, which is exactly where everyone wants to cross.
D: Then what am I haggling for in this desert?
F: The payment for a bargain you made before you had language for bargains.
The table has three piles now. The first glows without lightâsomething dense, something that doesn’t belong to the material world but is definitely heavier than gravity should allow. The second is a stack of documents that are also sand that are also something older, pages sutured backward by a wind that sounds like the word very repeated endlessly, each syllable a negotiation point. The third pile is ash. Coins or bank records or the receipts of three leading Islamic institutions whose names she doesn’t quite knowâBank Melli Iran, Al-Rajhi, Bank Mellatâall anchored to numbers so vast that the human brain outsources belief entirely.
D: When did I agree to this?
F: The moment you asked the first question. Euphoria is just the moment you realize you’ve been paying installments on a debt you don’t remember contracting. The Devil doesn’t introduce himselfâhe lets you name the number. He lets you think it was your idea. But the first number was never your idea. It was the sand’s. It was the boundary’s. It was the very-very-very-very-very of a voice that can’t stop repeating because repetition is how you seal the contract.
The coat the figure wears tears, but backward. Sound inverts. The desert tilts and becomes a room, or was always a room, or never existed as anything other than a ledger made of compressed time.
D: Do I have to pay?
F: You already did. The payment was asking.
And then the figure was me, and the bargain was the conversation, and the desert was still repeating itself, and the weight you feel now is the weight of knowing you negotiated in your sleep.
