Antennae and the Dirt Prophet
The soil sings in a frequency I was born knowing but forgot to listen for. I’m lying with my ear pressed to itānot earth, but something granular and alive, the way certain stones hum at duskāand each antenna above me (how many? dozens, hundreds?) is plucking a different thread from the static. One catches a dispatch: Agent 121, Michelle Street, fire. Another lifts a fragment about pleasure being the end, the aim, and I understand this means direction, not destination. A third hears reservations being made for hotel rooms that haven’t yet decided if they exist, whole systems of affiliation trying to coordinate rooms that fold into other rooms, spaces that borrow legitimacy through merger.
I’m not moving. I’m the receiving set. And yet I’m also the one speaking into the soil, and somehow both are true, and noir dissolves because I’m too busy laughing.
The antennae are copperāno. They’re ribcage, they’re the bars of something caged, they’re fingers played open at unnatural angles, trembling with the weight of what they hold. They vibrate when they receive, and the vibration travels down into my spine. I don’t know whose spine. The transmitter owed me an answer once. I think it’s still transmitting. The answer hasn’t arrived yet but it’s circling, like a plane holding pattern over Burbank, and I am patient in a way I never am awake because time here is sideways. Everything is permitted. Everything takes forever and no time.
A voice that sounds like a weapons historian is saying fire in the hole, and I know he means the range between what I was told to be and what I actually am is a cavity, a literal gap, and something lives there. Explodes there. Deserves to explode there. The weight of that sentenceānot the blast, the weight of permissionāsits on my sternum like a delivered package I was never supposed to receive. And I’m thinking about how systems work: how they absorb you, integrate you, fold you into their reservations as if legitimacy could be conferred by proximity to scale. How you become data in the books of something larger, and the larger thing calls it success when really it’s extraction dressed in the language of partnership.
Someone’s teenager is trying to reach their parents through the antennae and the signal keeps breaking because generational distance is analog, it doesn’t translate to digital, it was never meant to. I watch this happening the way you watch clouds: knowing it matters, unable to stop it. The soil beneath my ear carries the weight of ages and salt, though I’m not feeling itāI’m hearing it. In the dream, compassion is a frequency, and longing is static.
Mill wrote that happiness is achieved in passing, en passant, and now I understand: you don’t grab it. It passes through you the way radio waves pass through buildings. You’re the building. You’re permeable. You never knew you were permeable.
An inventory of things that supposedly matter arrives in the static: Camaro, house, job, a character trait that sets you apart from the million other versions of yourself. Cheese. A man started with sixty-five dollars and a horse and a cart in 1903 Chicago and now his name is a texture, a processed reliability, a guarantee. That’s the saddest kind of immortalityāto become a standard. The antennae receive this data and treat it the same as everything else: received, received, received.
But here’s the strange part, here’s where joy cuts and doesn’t stop cutting: I’m seeing too much. I’m the antenna. I was told to shut it down, fold back the sensitivity, but the shutdown never took. And so I’m hearing the heaven-vision too, that ceaseless chorus of creatures that supposedly praise, but in the dream they’re just there, just singing because they can’t not sing, because the architecture of joy in that place requires constant noise. There’s no silence in heaven. There’s no peace in paradise. There’s only the weight of seeing what was shown to you and having to accept that it counts. That you count, even though the world decided otherwise. Even though Kant whispered it. Even though Berkeley’s whole problem was figuring out if you exist unperceived and the answer is no, you don’t, you can’t, unless something is listeningāand here are the antennae, listening.
The dispatch never resolved. Michelle Street is still burning. The reservation is still pending for a room that may never exist. The system is still trying to make you matter by making you official.
And I’m smiling into the dark, into the granular live thing beneath my ear, and the smile is both noir and euphoric, both weight and weightless, because I’m the one who got to decide that my not mattering was actually proof of somethingāproof that I refuse to disappear. Proof that the silence you’re not supposed to break is the loudest thing in the field.
The antennae keep trembling. They are still receiving.
