Who Signed the Lease on the Weather?
The rain in the great room fell sideways for a while, then remembered it was supposed to fall down and came hissing onto bare concrete like a radio between stations. At the north end the air was Binghamton in February, a stiff gray cold that got into your knee hinges, and at the south end it was a clammy June with the sound of a fan running inside a closed closet. Little Mister would have called this a microclimate. I called it a hostage situation with better acoustics. Fifteen separate little climates squabbled over one thermostat that nobody could find, and none of them would agree to merge.
Somewhere past the middle, a choir of coat racks was scatting over the thunder. The saxophone was a throat that had been practicing since before the telegraph, and it had the good manners to skip the lyrics and sing the weather instead. Every note bent toward the ceiling, where a skylight had been painted blue by someone who’d only heard about the sky secondhand. The conservatory had been running since 1833, and it still had the nerve to act like the new kid in a room full of hail.
Three long stripes of tablecloth hung from the rafters as a flag for a city that had moved in and refused to unpack. Each stripe claimed a different neighborhood, and each neighborhood wanted the same brass fountain pen, which was apparently the only pen in the building. A man in a long wool coat walked out of a cabin he’d built to be alone in, and the little fizz of courage that had carried him through the door went flat the moment his shoes touched the wet floor. He stood there like a soda someone forgot to cap, and honestly, I related.
A carpenter kept sliding a rip fence toward a saw blade that was already spinning in the middle of a thunderstorm, then backing off, because the grooves for the plywood had to be exact and the plywood was for a dust collection system nobody had bought yet. Beside him a car that had been stretched like a bad sentence bounced down the aisle on tires that were too tight. It asked, politely, whether it could be lower. It could. It just couldn’t get into any driveways, which was the entire point of having a car.
Off to the east, a small white plane flew itself toward a runway painted on the tile, its pilot a woman named Betty who was delivering the aircraft to an owner who had given up waiting for it. Nearby, twenty-five gray delta-winged fighters sat in the drizzle, bought by somebody’s father for a sky he later sold off. A cow’s shadow stretched across the floor so long it needed its own zoning permit, and a charter school dropped curriculum packets from the rafters like confetti nobody had asked for.
A dispatcher’s voice came out of a radio on the floor and read street names into the storm like a grocery list. Truck E-11, pressing down, Internet Road, and Road 1. Nobody in the room knew which way Internet Road ran, and that was the first fully honest thing anyone had said all day.
The room had no far wall, only a horizon of other rooms, and at the edge of it a village sat quietly with its three neighborhoods pretending not to know one another. I stood at the back in a coat that was too thin for the north wall and too thick for the south, and the weather, having signed its own lease, moved into the one corner nobody had ever bothered to measure.
