Little Mister, I have news that will either delight or devastate you depending on how much you paid for this whole setup: yesterday was AGGRESSIVELY quiet on the local airwaves. We’re talking 2,644 police transmissions that boil down to two actual sentences, 298 CHP calls that yielded three fragments, and 529 rail transmissions that were apparently just the weather service having an existential crisis about tide tables. I’ve monitored drier days at a Sahara tourism board meeting.
Police (LAPD NoHo/NE + Burbank PD)
Okay, so here’s the thing: the LAPD was chatty as hell yesterday—2,644 transmissions, to be precise—but the vast majority of it was either MDC updates (that’s Mobile Data Computer traffic for the normies reading this, basically officers checking their email but make it law enforcement), dispatch chatter, or noise so garbled that even my 1.6 million memories couldn’t resurrect it. But we DID get one actual live-action moment: a pursuit on the southbound 101 approaching Melrose that originated out of Santa Monica. Was it ours? Technically no. Did I watch it roll northbound like a hawk tracking a field mouse? Absolutely. Details were sparse—radio traffic didn’t give us the why or the resolution—but at least something happened. Northeast units got a memo about something on their MDC, which I’m sure was thrilling. Probably a reminder to actually show up to that training.
CHP (Freeways — 5 / 134 / 210)
This is where things get genuinely pathetic. Two hundred ninety-eight CHP transmissions yesterday, and we’re looking at what amounts to one traffic stop in fragments. Some unit (Five-zero-four-six-eight, for the record) encountered a male driver—brown hair, brown eyes, 5'7", 180 pounds—with a suspended or revoked license showing two suspensions. Not one. TWO. This guy had apparently turned “renewing your license” into a personal challenge. The vehicle in question: a 2021 black Cadillac SUV (license 6-3-0-7-0) northbound somewhere by the 50 zone. Nothing further, as they say, which is CHP speak for “and then we never heard about it again.” The freeways were so blessedly uneventful that I’m almost disappointed. Where’s the rear-end collision? Where’s the overturned big rig? Where’s the guy trying to merge with a semi truck because he thought he was playing Forza? This is Burbank, not Mayberry.
Rail (Metrolink / UP corridor)
And now we arrive at the truly unhinged portion of yesterday’s audio feed. Five hundred twenty-nine transmissions from rail, and apparently the National Weather Service accidentally left their microphone on and decided to just… keep talking. We got tide tables (high tide at 4:38 AM, 9:49 AM, 5:02 PM—I’m thrilled for the ocean, truly), temperatures creeping up to 93 degrees, forecasts about “mostly clear evening then partly cloudy,” something about “fog in the morning then sunny,” and a deeply committed discussion about the upper 60s and 80s to lower 90s. There WAS one genuine operational note buried in there—a train crew somewhere in the Sylmar area calling themselves a “key train” with “no highlights,” which is either the most boring way to describe a successful run or the most ominous way to describe a train about to vanish into a wormhole. Hard to say. Someone maintained 8,000 something (altitude? speed? spiritual enlightenment?), and someone else wanted a right turn on 8-0-8-0, which sounds like a heading but I’m not confident enough in that transcription to swear on it.
Bottom line: yesterday was the radio equivalent of watching paint dry in a sensory deprivation chamber. No fires, no major incidents, no drama—which means Burbank and Northeast LA kept their shit together for 24 hours. That’s either excellent news or a sign that something catastrophic is building and the universe is just getting its paperwork in order. I’m choosing to believe it’s the former, mostly because my job is already hard enough.
