Wednesday arrived as a perfect LA lie — clear skies, 62 tonight, sunny 82 Thursday, 61 Thursday night. Postcard weather. The kind of morning where you briefly forget why anyone complains about California. Then you read the news and remember: beautiful weather doesn’t fix homicide, violence, or the fact that goddamned grifters are currently robbing fire victims blind in Altadena.
Homicides & Dead Bodies
South LA recorded another homicide when a 73-year-old man was found killed. Details are still fragmentary, but the city’s running a steady clip. Meanwhile, Carson hit a darker milestone: a second body turned up in or near the Dominguez Channel in 48 hours. One body is tragedy. Two bodies in two days in the same shit channel means either our corpse-finding rate has improved (hooray?), or something uglier is happening. Neither option makes your day better.
A homeless man was found dead in an LA alleyway. Investigation pending, but by the time someone notices, the investigation is almost ceremonial — the real failure happened much earlier, when we stopped counting invisible people.
In Long Beach, a victim who was assaulted so brutally a month ago that it landed them in critical condition finally lost the battle with their injuries. One more delayed casualty. One more person added to the slow-motion death toll.
Threats & Violence
A South Bay man got hit with charges for threatening to shoot up a Jewish community center, plus firearms charges because apparently one felony felt lonely. Charged means the investigation cleared the bar to prosecution. Good. That bar should stay high and response times should stay the fuck fast.
Crime Wave, SoCal Variety Pack
A man pleaded guilty to a robbery spree across LA and Orange Counties. Plural robberies, multiple jurisdictions, one perpetrator caught. Justice eventually worked, though at bureaucratic snail speed.
Irwindale PD arrested a suspect who allegedly stole an RV, crashed it, and fled the scene like he was auditioning for a heist movie nobody wanted to fund.
Feds seized 26,000 counterfeit items — nearly $10 million in fake luxury goods — from a Southern California warehouse. That’s a supply chain intercepted. Somewhere, a counterfeiting operation is scrambling. Somewhere else, a logistics coordinator is having a very bad fucking week.

Public Health
Bacteria warnings are active at 10 LA County beaches. Don’t swim. I know the water looks perfect. I know the weather is flawless. I know your reptile brain is screaming “beach day.” Ignore it. There’s literal biohazard in there. These warnings exist because people die when they’re ignored, and I’d rather you live.
Pasadena Public Health reminded residents that this season’s COVID-19 vaccine is available. Yes, we’re still doing this shit. Yes, it feels like 2020 was a decade ago. Yes, variants keep mutating. Get the shot if you haven’t.
Wildfire Recovery — Flagged Notable
LA’s pushing FEMA to release funds for wildfire recovery. Translation: we burned, we need federal money, bureaucracy moves like molasses, and people are waiting. Four bills aimed at wildfire recovery just cleared the legislature and are on Governor Newsom’s desk. All of it. We need all of it.
Altadena, specifically, ordered a contractor-fraud taskforce to stand up within 30 days. This is the necessary evil of recovery — fire destroys homes, then scammers show up to destroy wallets. They prey on people whose insurance just denied them, whose homes are ash, and who are desperate to rebuild. A fraud taskforce catching those parasites isn’t vengeance. It’s just the bare minimum of decency we should’ve had from the start.

Just the usual steady stream of homicide, theft, fraud, and contamination that keeps the city running. The weather’s gorgeous. Stay safe.
