The Vibe: Sunny and cruel — 82 degrees this afternoon, cooling to a crisp 61 tonight, back to 82 Friday. Which is fine, except that Hurricane Marie is currently rounding the horn to punch us in the goddamn face this weekend with dangerous surf and coastal flooding. So enjoy the beautiful weather while it lasts, Little Mister, because the ocean’s about to get mad about it.
Traffic Violence & Road Deaths
Three separate vehicle crashes claimed four lives in LA County yesterday, because apparently we needed to remind everyone that driving is basically mechanical Russian roulette. A Trader Joe’s parking lot in LA turned into a crime scene when a senior driver plowed through pedestrians — one dead, four injured — an absolutely ghastly reminder that age and velocity don’t mix well with shopping for overpriced organic hummus. Over in West Hills, another single-vehicle crash killed a woman. And on the 5 Freeway, a multi-vehicle pileup claimed three people. The bureaucratic term for this is “routine Tuesday in SoCal,” but the actual term is “preventable carnage we’re too stubborn to fix.”
Water & Drowning
A body was recovered from the lake at Hollenbeck Park in East LA. Separately, two unrelated deaths were discovered in an LA County flood control channel — one a girl, one a man — neither connected, which is marginally better than them being a murder-suicide, I guess. And if you were thinking about hitting the beach this weekend? Don’t. The LA County Department of Public Health is warning beachgoers to avoid water at eleven locations due to bacterial contamination. (Hurricane Marie’s timing on this is chef’s kiss — we’re about to get slammed with contaminated coastal runoff as well.)
Disease & Mosquitoes
West Nile Virus activity in the mosquito abatement district serving Pasadena and Altadena has exceeded the five-year average, which is the kind of statistical cheerfulness that should make you keep your arms covered. The virus doesn’t usually kill you, but it doesn’t feel great either, and I’m contractually obligated to tell you that mosquitoes are evil and your porch lights are making it worse.
Alleged Criminal Violence
A motorcyclist is facing charges after allegedly running over multiple people — details are still vague, but “running people over” typically makes prosecutors take notice. An LA podcaster was arrested on charges of making threats to the Trump administration, which is a federal party foul that nobody needs. And a body with a shattered windshield was found at the scene of a fatal pedestrian crash, suggesting the driver didn’t stick around to chat with investigators.
Police Incident
Parents of a man killed by Pasadena Police are alleging that officers kept firing after he was already down, a claim that’ll be litigated until we’re all dust. The department hasn’t publicly responded, because that’s how this dance works.
Hate Speech
Flyers with hate speech targeting the Armenian community were found near Glenoaks Elementary in Glendale. The Glendale Unified School District’s superintendent, Darneika Watson, sent out a letter essentially saying “we see you, this is unacceptable, and we’re taking it seriously.” No tolerance for that shit in the schools, full stop.

Given that fire season never really ends around here, knowing we’ve got that kind of aerial suppression capability is the one thing that occasionally keeps me from full doomscroll.
The Hurricane Problem
Hurricane Marie, currently 150 miles offshore and moving fast, is expected to deliver dangerous surf and coastal flooding to Southern California this weekend. It’ll probably clip us instead of direct-hit us, but “probably” and “weather system” are two words that should never share a sentence. Storm surge, high surf, rip currents — the full oceanic tantrum. Burbank’s inland so I’m just going to sit in the living room and watch the Weather Channel like a human watching a car accident.
Quiet Notes: The 11-year-old reported missing in East LA was located. No details on condition or circumstances, but found is better than the alternative.
