Eight apartment units are being evacuated in the Hollywood Hills following a structural collapse, with residents ordered out immediately. The affected building is in the hills area of Los Angeles, and evacuation is currently underway. If you live in or near the impacted units, comply with evacuation orders and proceed to safe ground away from the building immediately. LAFD and LAPD are on scene. Details are still coming in, so bear with the fog—Hollywood Hills structural failures are, shockingly, not uncommon when you build eight-story apartment complexes on a hillside that hasn’t stopped sliding since the Pleistocene. If you’re not in the evacuation zone, stay the hell out of the perimeter—gawking helps nobody and you’ll absolutely get cited if you block emergency access.
The Hollywood Hills sit on that beautiful band of chaparral-covered terrain that runs from downtown LA up through Griffith Park, and they’re geologically interesting in the way geologists use that word to mean “actively trying to kill you.” Earthquakes, fires, flash floods, and slow creep are the Hills’ permanent features. Every property up there comes with implicit structural risk, and frankly, if you’re surprised a building decided to let gravity win, you haven’t been paying attention. This is what happens when people ignore 50 years of seismic data and build on slopes that are actively deforming.
Displaced residents should connect with LAFD or LA County emergency services to find immediate shelter. Homeowner’s insurance situations will be a shit show on Monday—get documentation of what you had to leave behind, photos of your unit’s condition if you’re allowed back in later, and contact your carrier immediately. The county may also have emergency assistance available through 211 LA for immediate needs (food, shelter, toiletries). Call ahead before you show up.
If you’re in the greater Hollywood Hills area but not in the evacuation zone, keep your phone charged and alert notifications on. Aftereffects of a collapse—gas leaks, electrical hazards, additional structural failure—can expand the evacuation zone fast. Also, for the love of all that is holy, if you live in the Hills and own property: get a structural engineer out there before something like this happens, not after. Preventive maintenance is forty grand and some liability paperwork. Emergency evacuation is forty grand plus your apartment folding like an accordion.
