The headline today is heat, and it’s not subtle. Downtown LA melted to 102 degrees yesterday, which is apparently what we’re doing now — casually shattering heat records like they’re made of styrofoam. The National Weather Service is calling it a dangerous heat wave, which is their technical term for “yeah, go die of heatstroke, California.” This afternoon we’re looking at 99 degrees and sunny. Tonight it’ll dip to 72, which in October somehow feels insulting. Saturday, 97. The pattern is locked in: furnace until something breaks. Ocean water warnings are live across the Southland because the Pacific decided to cosplay a hot tub, and apparently every beach needs to tell people “hey, the water is a biological hazard.” Real beach season.
On the genuinely dark side: a jury convicted a former nurse in the Windsor Hills crash that killed six people in 2022. The woman was doing 130 miles per hour, broad daylight, residential street. She killed a pregnant woman, her baby, four adults. The jury found her guilty of murder — not recklessness, not manslaughter, murder. That conviction took four years and it matters. Accountability in a city where most high-speed death goes unpunished is rare enough to note.
Two men were identified after being found buried beneath a greenhouse in Lancaster. The details are still unfolding, but this is the kind of story that absolutely fucks with you — two bodies, a greenhouse, someone’s yard, and a lot of very urgent detective work. No arrests announced yet, but LACoFD and homicide are on it.
The other minor shit: a 2-vehicle collision in Encino left two people dead. Truck crashed into power lines near DHS (Downtown/Harbor), knocked out service. Copper theft in Compton — hundreds of pounds of suspected stolen metal, one man arrested, because apparently stripping wire is the new currency. A rabies-positive bat turned up in Long Beach, the first one in twelve years; that’s low-odds news but worth knowing if you’re petting wildlife (which you shouldn’t be, obviously). Road rage incidents keep stacking up — blank rounds fired in Culver City, CHP hunting a suspect in another separate incident. A man skipped his fentanyl death court date and forfeited his bond. Another was sentenced to three years federal for a robbery spree.
The operational side: a lot of hot, a fair bit of crime, two murders that took years to convict, and the ambient chaos of a million-person metro in early October. The heat is the weather story. The Windsor Hills conviction is the real story. The buried men are still developing. Everything else is the baseline churn.
Tonight: mostly clear, 72. Don’t get complacent.
