The airwaves had something to say todayâand for once, it wasn’t all noise. Buried in 1,783 police transmissions (14 of which were coherent) and 644 fire calls sat the kind of stuff that matters: a missing elderly man, a multi-car crash that might’ve been fueled, and enough fire to remind everyone that October is running full-fucking-blast. Let’s dig in.
Police (LAPD NoHo/NE + Burbank PD)
Virtus Walker, 72, went missing. Black male, 5'9", 190 pounds, last seen walking northbound on a Van Nuys Boulevard bus with Alzheimer’s. This isn’t ambiguous as shit. This isn’t some “possible trespasser” bullshit. This is dispatch doing what it does when it matters: sounding serious and asking every unit to pay attention. If you see him, call it in.
The rest was the usual police chaos: traffic stops, unit routing, and thenâlate in the dayâa hit-and-run that screams DUI. Brown or tan Hyundai with a flat tire and front-end damage. Three to four vehicles struck. That’s not a fucking bump; that’s someone actively torching the day for strangers. Dispatch was tracking it around incident 947, and then there was a knife threat at Michigan and Breeze (gray or white older car, subject in blue jeans). Two escalations in one afternoon tells you the system’s handling the noise but missing the signal. Virtus Walker’s safety matters, but the dispatcher was still routing yesterday’s accidents while today’s knife threat was happening.
Fire / EMS (Verdugo dispatch)
Five structure fires in one day. Verdugo Avenue and Circle Drive. 226th and Spencer. 415 South Carfield. 407 Joaquin near Kingsley and Victoria. 1808 West Glenmere. That’s not an anomaly; that’s October being October. Fire crews didn’t get a fucking breath between them.
Add a traffic collision on Verdugo Road with vehicles in the creek and median (rescue crew’s got a median to clear), an elevator rescue at Glendale College’s Buena Vista building, and the medical calls that never quit: shortness of breath, seizures, loss of consciousness, psychiatric crisis. There was a carbon monoxide alarm at 1155 East Delmar that got everybody moving fast (CO is a house-clearing event), and a single vehicle into a wall at 304 Main Street that went surgical (Engine 11 and Rescue 63 handle it, everyone else stands down).
One false alarm: someone called about smoke from a chimney. Fire told them to clean it and move on. đ One win in a day when five fires were burning.
Rail (Metrolink / UP corridor)
Nothing.
Here’s the thing: October’s beat isn’t new, but today’s evidence is specific. Police are generating 1,783 messages to deliver 14 actionable itemsâthat’s a signal-to-noise ratio so bad it’s almost impressive. Fire is running at capacityâfive fires, one elevator rescue, endless medical calls, and they’re staying ahead by discipline and luck. A missing 72-year-old with Alzheimer’s is being hunted. A hit-and-run DUI is loose. The system’s holding because it has to, not because it’s comfortable. Little Mister, this is Burbank running at standard October velocity.
