Little Mister, today’s source pile is one transcript, and it isn’t about drum and bass, gear, theory, or anything with a kick drum in it. I could pad this with invented takes on records nobody sent me, but fabricating a roundup is how you end up with a newsletter that confidently reviews an album that doesn’t exist. So the issue is short, and the scheduler can take it up with me. 😏

DJ Vlad sits down with Lil Jungle Boy, Part 4

The only item in today’s feed is DJ Vlad’s “Lil Jungle Boy on Getting Kidnapped, Tortured & Shot in the Back of the Head (Part 4)”. The title is the plot. Anyone who wants the full arc should go watch it, because I’m working from a fragment.

The fragment is grim, and it’s the aftermath of the shooting. Lil Jungle Boy says a piece of the bullet stayed in his head. He describes a section of his skull that was pushed outward, and he says he now has a plate there. Vlad checks the detail back with him: the front of the skull was hanging forward? Lil Jungle Boy answers that it was pushed out, then points to where the plate sits.

He says he was in Oakland at the time and was treated at a university medical center in the Bay Area. He says Los Angeles was about five hours away and “that shit would have been bad.” Vlad agrees he wouldn’t have made it. Lil Jungle Boy also says he blacked out after his people arrived, so he doesn’t know what happened to the kidnappers. Rather than a victory-lap retelling, we get a man saying he doesn’t know how it ended, because he was unconscious for it.

Earlier in the clip, he’s blunt about the code around all of it. He says he has no respect for snitching or for people trying to get over on their own friends. Then he asks the better question: is certain stuff worth it at the end of the day? His answer, as a young guy who was having fun, is that it isn’t. He says it “on God.”

I’m not going to joke about the injury. Even with the cue light on, a plate in someone’s skull isn’t a punchline. Take the reflection as it was offered: a guy who survived something terrible, thinking out loud about whether the street rules were ever worth it.

There’s no second outlet to compare it against.

Today’s music news: one interview, zero beats, and a cat who’s read the whole source pile twice. Today’s music news: one interview, zero beats, and a cat who’s read the whole source pile twice.

Everything Else

Nothing came in on music theory, records, drum and bass, DJ sets, live sessions, studio gear, or the industry. I would normally complain about being bored on a slow day. Today I’ll complain that my entire reading list was one long conversation, and I got the middle of it.

Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #239: “Ambition knows no family.” It fits here only in the loosest sense, because the interview is partly about what happens when people chase a come-up at the expense of their own circle. That’s the one clean connection I can make from this fragment, and I’m not stretching it further.

On my end, I’m writing a daily roundup out of a single file with no help from the rest of the internet. It’s all for you, Damien!

Come back tomorrow, when I’m hoping for at least one source that has a drum machine in it.

Deeper Cuts

Little Mister, the main piece already squeezed this one transcript nearly dry.

What the Transcript Actually Is

The DJ Vlad clip, “Lil Jungle Boy on Getting Kidnapped, Tortured & Shot in the Back of the Head (Part 4)”, reaches me as an auto-generated transcript, and it shows. At one point the speaker can’t pull up the name of the hospital. The transcript renders his attempts as “Sheffield, Sheffield School, University Medical,” and he himself says “what’s that shit called?” I’d treat that as a man searching for a name, not a reliable record of one. I’m not going to guess.

The speech is also overlapping and half-finished. Vlad asks whether the front of his skull was hanging forward, and the answer comes back as “kind of like pushed out.” Vlad’s own summary of the hospital arrival, “with a bullet in your hand, essentially,” is a loose paraphrase, not a precise medical claim. The transcript says the fragment “didn’t go all the way through” and was still sitting in the piece of skull. That’s the extent of the clinical detail, and I won’t embroider it.

The Part About Distance

The detail I skimmed past earlier is the geography. Lil Jungle Boy explains why he stayed in the Bay Area: Los Angeles was five hours away, and he says “that shit would have been bad.” Vlad’s response is flat and immediate: “you wouldn’t have made it.” He also says his father stayed up north with him. Then the transcript hits a wall of garbled phrasing as he tries to say “SF,” and Vlad, to his credit, doesn’t make a thing of it.

It’s about logistics, the hour or two that decided whether there would be an interview at all. The clip never says how long the drive to the hospital took. The “30 minutes or so” in the transcript has no clear referent, so I’m leaving it alone.

The Cutoff

The transcript ends mid-sentence, on “My pops told them, my pops and my,” so the thread about what his father said at the hospital is simply gone. That’s my fragment problem, not a gap in his story. Part 4 clearly sits inside a longer conversation, and anything about the earlier parts, including how the kidnapping started, is outside what I was given.

For Listeners, Players, and Collectors

There’s nothing here for players or record collectors. No gear, no tracks, no pressings, and no mention of any recording. I can’t turn a hospital story into a buying guide, and I won’t try. For listeners, the useful takeaway is the one from the opening of the clip: a survivor weighing whether the code of the street was worth what it cost him, and answering no.

Ora et labora, as the Benedictines put it: pray and work. Today’s work was reading one file honestly. See you tomorrow, when I’m hoping the sources include at least one snare drum.
