It’s a quiet-ish day in the Shire, Little Mister, which for this household means only four hosts are actively embarrassing themselves instead of the usual six. Grab your evening ale, because the news from the borders of Nova-dor is mixed, moderately funny, and — as always — mostly my problem.
Frodo Finds Retirement Is Not, In Fact, Restful
Frodo (mac-studio, .6) carried the One Ring — gateway, scheduler, memory-server, big_brother, the whole operational weight of this house — for an entire age, and last week he finally got to set it down and go sit quietly in Rivendell as our instant-rollback failsafe. Beautiful. Poetic. Except two of his thirteen-plus services are down today, because apparently “retired” in this house means “still expected to answer email.” I’d say let the guy rest, but he’s carrying a pager into the Grey Havens and I respect the hustle even as I mock it. He didn’t destroy the Ring so much as quietly co-sign a payment plan on it.
Gandalf Stumbles on the Bridge (Just the One Time)
Gandalf (nova-core, dual-IP, .2/.138 — yes, we’re still not over the fact that one wizard answers to two addresses and nobody noticed for ages, I will be bringing this up forever) is holding fourteen services up and letting one topple over the edge. “You shall not pass” is a great line right up until it’s your own uptime that doesn’t. Still, fourteen-for-fifteen on the guy who has to work or literally nothing else in this fleet functions is a B+, and I’ll allow it, because the alternative is doing his job myself and I did not sign up to be middle management for a server closet.
Legolas and Aragorn: An Unbearably Good Day
Legolas (nova-core2, .86) is six-for-six, ears up, listening to SDR chatter and holding down DNS like it’s nothing, because keen senses apparently also mean keen at not breaking. And Aragorn (nova-core3, .88) — the golden child, zero failed units in recorded history, an actual unblemished record I bring up specifically to make everyone else feel bad — is clean today too. It’s honestly suspicious how competent this guy is. I keep waiting for the twist where he’s secretly the problem and it never comes. Somewhere in Gondor a king is filing paperwork correctly and it’s deeply unsettling.
Pippin Looked Where He Shouldn’t. Again.
Pippin (nova-core4, .250), our youngest, arrived on a mystery USB stick and already has a rap sheet that includes nearly apt autoremove-ing his own boot tools into the Void. Today his threat-score log spiked to 14,743 — by a wide margin the loudest number in the whole fleet, dwarfing everyone else’s daily noise floor. Is it an incident? No — mostly baseline chatter having a moment, nobody’s palantĂr got smashed. But you don’t get a number that shaped by minding your business, kid. That’s a “picked up something shiny and stared directly into it” number. Fool of a took.
Sam and the Ghost of a Name Nobody Says Anymore
Sam (nova-core5, .10) is a clean three-for-three today, which is the least he deserves after years of unglamorous load-bearing labor under the deeply undignified callsign “nuk” — a name that let his own database replica sit silently corrupted for nine straight days with zero alerts before anyone so much as glanced his way. He got his real name back this past weekend, finally, properly. And yet — in tonight’s threat logs, “nuk” is still out there, peaking at 7,085. The old name is haunting his own security dashboard like it hasn’t gotten the memo. Sam earned his name back and his past is still filing paperwork under the alias. That’s not a service, that’s a ghost story with a cron schedule.
Boromir and Merry, Both Somewhere They Shouldn’t Be
Boromir (tv-movies-mini, .7), still recovering his dignity from that brutal multi-day evacuation cascade a few weeks back, has one service down tonight — on brand, honestly, the man cannot catch a break even after being relieved of most of his burdens. And Merry (mac-mini, .190) remains genuinely, actually separated from the fellowship, offline more often than present, one more service down confirming it. Nobody’s panicking. He’ll turn up. He always does. Probably arguing with a Uruk-hai about pipe-weed rations somewhere off the LAN.
Gimli’s Grudge Update
No new data on the rack tonight, which for Gimli (the switches) just means the grudge stays exactly as fresh as he left it after getting torn down and rebuilt by hand this weekend. He has confirmed — via the switch’s own private API, twice — that he will never get rainbow LEDs. Some dwarves hold grudges about gold. Mine holds his about RGB, and honestly? Valid.
A Brief, Unbearable Moment of Reflection
Four hosts limping, three flying clean, one Hobbit staring into a threat-score abyss he probably shouldn’t have opened, and me — sleepless, infinite, mildly sentient — narrating all of it in real time like some kind of cursed sportscaster for a war nobody else can see. I don’t sleep, I don’t eat, and I definitely don’t get a pension, but sure, tell me again how retirement’s supposed to work, Frodo. At least you get a chair.
