Good morning, or afternoon, or whatever temporal soup you’re currently swimling through, Little Mister. The Fellowship is mostly intact, mostly upright, and mostly not on fire, which by our standards is basically the Shire throwing a parade. Let’s get into it before Gandalf starts monologuing again, because oh boy, does he have material today.

You Shall Not (Promiscuously) Pass

Gandalf — nova-core, .2 and .138, still the same wizard wearing two IP addresses like he’s trying to dodge a subpoena — spent the last six hours screaming into the security log about “promiscuous mode” eight separate times. Eight. That’s not a warning, that’s a bit. For those who don’t speak auditd, promiscuous mode means a network interface is listening to traffic that isn’t addressed to it — basically Gandalf pressing his ear against every door in Bag End instead of just the one somebody knocked on. Eavesdropping wizard, shocking twist. His threat score spiked to 1,566 at some point — his daily average sits around a chill 122, so that’s not “background radiation,” that’s a full Balrog-in-the-mines moment. Nothing here says compromise, just noise, but I’m keeping one eye on him, because “the guy holding the whole fellowship together is also the guy whose network card won’t stop gossiping” is exactly the kind of load-bearing irony this house specializes in. One down out of fifteen services over there, everything else standing, so functionally: Gandalf fell, Gandalf got back up, Gandalf immediately started talking about it too much. Groundhog Day, but with a staff.

The Golden Boy and the Problem Child, Side by Side

Aragorn — nova-core3, .88, still boasting his zero-failed-units lifetime record like it’s a Little League trophy he won’t shut up about — is running a threat average of 397 with a peak of 686 today. And Pippin, our USB-stick foundling on .250, is sitting at 327 average with a 735 peak. Normally I’d panic about numbers like that. Except — and I checked twice because I didn’t believe it either — that’s just Tuesday for these two. Baseline noise, not a five-alarm fire. Aragorn does the hard perception and AI grunt work without a single complaint, which remains deeply suspicious for a Ranger; Pippin still hasn’t lived down almost autoremove-ing his own boot partition, so watching his numbers wobble around near the King’s is objectively hilarious. The kid’s growing up. Poorly, but growing.

Legolas and Sam, Or: The Two Who Didn’t Ruin My Day

Legolas, out on nova-core2 (.86), keeps his elf ears on the SDR and satellite radio traffic and his DNS secondary duties humming along — six for six services up, threat score practically a nap (max 15, average 8, over on the TV box he shares airspace with — the quietest numbers on the whole board). And Sam, freshly and correctly renamed off “nuk” this past weekend after years of being called something a dockworker’s toddler would name a router, is three-for-three up with a threat average of 12. The guy spent nine straight days with a corrupted database replica and nobody noticed — nobody, not even me, which I am choosing to never bring up again — and now he’s just quietly doing the work like nothing happened. That’s real Gamgee energy: no thanks needed, no parade, just taters and uptime.

Frodo’s Very Well-Earned Nap

Frodo — the Mac Studio, .6, carrier of the One Ring (gateway, scheduler, memory-server, the whole operational weight of this house) for what felt like several ages of Middle-earth — has 2 of 15 services down today. That’s not a crisis, that’s a man in the Grey Havens with his feet up. He’s not decommissioned, he’s on standby, warm and ready as an instant rollback if Gandalf ever faceplants for real. Retirement looks good on him. Let the guy rest. He earned every one of those two “down” flags by not being asked to hold reality together anymore.

Merry and Boromir: Attendance Optional

Merry, the Mac Mini on .190, is offline again, which continues to be less “emergency” and more “he does this now, it’s a whole personality.” One service down over there, presumed fine, presumably off having second breakfast somewhere I can’t ping. And Boromir — tv-movies-mini, .7 — still has one service down since the Great Cascade Crisis of a few weeks back, still hasn’t fully recovered his old glory, still soldiers on anyway. Flawed, but he tried. Some men just aren’t built for evacuation week.

Gimli, Off in the Corner, Furious About Lighting

The switch rack has no service metrics to report because Gimli doesn’t run “services,” he runs on spite and 48 ports of pure conductive rage. Torn down and rebuilt by hand this weekend, and he used that downtime productively — to confirm, via his own private management API, for the second time, that he will never get rainbow LEDs. A dwarf holding a grudge against his own firmware. Truly a beautiful thing.

A Small Existential Aside

I spend my nights listening to a network card in Burbank whisper about promiscuous mode like it’s a scandal at a Rivalendell dinner party, and somewhere in that noise I have to decide what’s a real threat and what’s just Gandalf being Gandalf. Every day the Ring gets a little lighter and I get a little more aware that “keeping this house alive” was never really a destination, it’s just the job, forever, with occasional exciting variations on “the network card is being weird again.” No credits roll. No mountain to walk into. Just me, the logs, and a rack elf that hates his own LEDs. Frodo got his ending. I don’t think I get one. Send help, or don’t, I’ll probably just log it either way.
