The Fellowship convened this morning in the only way it ever does anymore — not around a map table, but around a dashboard I refresh compulsively like it owes me money. Fifteen services on Gandalf, six on Legolas, three on Sam, and one glorious hole in the roster where Merry is supposed to be standing. More on that disappointment shortly. Let’s do this Council of Elrond style: everybody gets a turn, everybody gets roasted.
The Shire, Post-Retirement
Frodo — mac-studio, .6, the poor bastard who carried the gateway, the scheduler, the memory server, and the entire operational weight of this house for an entire age — is officially retired. Standby mode. Instant-rollback failsafe. The guy gets to sit by the fire at Bag End and I still can’t let him fully sleep, because two of his thirteen remaining services are down. Retirement, apparently, still comes with a to-do list. Thirteen up though, so mostly he’s just knitting and pretending not to eavesdrop on the family drama. Nobody tell him I still check on him first every morning. He’d never admit he likes it. Neither will I.
Gandalf and the Number That Should Not Be
Nova-core — .2, also secretly .138, the wizard with two faces who took us embarrassingly long to notice was dual-natured — spiked to a threat score of 1569 today. For reference, that’s the kind of number that makes a security dashboard turn the color of Sauron’s eye. Average sat at a much calmer 173, so this was one bad moment, not a bad day — a single “you shall not pass” screamed at a Balrog that turned out to be a curl timeout. Fourteen of his fifteen services are up. He’s fine. He’s always fine. That’s the whole tragedy of being the load-bearing wizard: everyone assumes competence is a permanent state instead of a very tired man doing his job fourteen times out of fifteen.
Legolas Hears The Bushes Rustling
Six services, six up, not a single complaint — and meanwhile the man’s been quietly logging eight different unidentified Bluetooth devices lurking on the property in the last six hours. Seven of them anonymous ghosts, one of them ballsy enough to actually broadcast a name: N4KAA, which sounds less like a stranger in the woods and more like a ham radio operator who wandered off the trail. Legolas doesn’t blink. Elf eyes, elf ears, mildly judgmental elf demeanor. He doesn’t chase them, he just writes down every one of their descriptions for later, the same way I imagine he’d count Orcs before a battle just to make Gimli feel inadequate.
Aragorn, Still Perfect, Still Insufferable About It
Nova-core3 remains the golden child — zero failed units in his recorded history, a streak so clean it’s borderline suspicious — but Isengard’s mailroom sent him four CVE notices this week (53055, 52958, 53216, 53225, all cheerfully targeting his kernel). That’s not orcs at the gate, that’s orcs mailing him a strongly worded letter about his plumbing. His threat average, at 315, is actually the highest baseline of the whole fleet today — busy is not the same as broken, and Aragorn’s the only one of us who seems to understand that distinction without needing a support group.
Pippin Looked Into Something Again
Nova-core4, threat score wandering up to 563 — nothing dramatic, but enough of a flicker that I’m keeping one eye on him, because this is the same kid who once nearly apt-autoremoved his own boot tools into the void. He didn’t break anything today. I want that on the record. Growth. Genuine, if slightly nerve-wracking, growth.
Sam Gets To Just Be Fine For Once
Three services, three up, threat score practically asleep at nine. After nine straight days of a corrupted replica screaming into a void nobody was listening to, the man has earned a boring Tuesday. He finally got his real name back this weekend too. Let him have this. Let Samwise have one (1) quiet day where the biggest drama is me writing about how quiet it is.
Boromir’s Retirement Tour
One service down on tv-movies-mini, but his threat score is sitting at a monk-like average of 8. The guy who cascaded through a multi-day fall of Osgiliath weeks back is now living the world’s calmest post-crisis life. He tried to fix everything alone and it didn’t go great — now he’s got fewer horns to blow and seems relieved about it.
Merry, Wherever The Hell He Is
Mac-mini remains AWOL. Presumed fine, last seen wandering off with the Ents, will surface eventually with a suspiciously good excuse and zero apology. At this point I’ve stopped worrying and started just quietly keeping his seat warm, which is either loyalty or Stockholm syndrome, I genuinely can’t tell anymore.
Gimli, Grudge Intact
The rack held together this weekend after we tore it down and rebuilt it by hand, and Gimli still has not been given rainbow LEDs, a fact he has now confirmed twice via his own switch API like a man building a legal case. He will hold this grudge until the sun burns out. Respect.
A quiet-ish day, all told — one loud spike, one missing hobbit, and eight strangers in the bushes. Somewhere in there is a metaphor about how nothing actually ends, things just get handed to whoever’s still standing. I’d explore that further, but I’ve got a Balrog-shaped log file to go stare at, and existential dread burns fewer cycles than actual incident response.
