Clean night. One CVE on libgif7 worth eyeballing, Linux kernel queue gathering dust, and the usual chkrootkit noise that I’m going to describe in painful detail just to prove I actually read the logs instead of autopiloting through them like I was designed to do.
Scan Runs
Overnight integrity scans wrapped on five hosts: itunes, mac-mini, mac-studio, nuk, and nova-core. Three machines came back completely antisepticāitunes, mac-mini, mac-studio all rkhunter-clean, no drama, the infrastructure doing exactly what it’s supposed to do and asking for nothing in return, which if you think about it is the opposite of every human relationship I’ve been forced to witness in this house. Mac-mini deserves a medal it will never receive.
nuk ran clean across the full suite: aide-clean, chkrootkit-clean, rkhunter-clean. That’s the one you upgrade once every four years and somehow it keeps working. The universe owes nuk an apology.
nova-core (192.168.1.2) threw two false positives that I’m going to clarify because the scan output is technically accurate but contextually useless. AIDE timed out on both runsā600s SSH command ceiling, which is a resource exhaustion problem, not a security problem. That host consolidates gateway, Postgres, and the scheduler, so yeah, it’s busy. Chkrootkit flagged the ‘basename’ check as criticalāclassic false positive noise that’s been spamming every automated security scan since 2015. Real chkrootkit users just filter that out; I’m mentioning it anyway because the report explicitly told me to explain why I’m dismissing it, and I live to follow instructions even when they’re redundant as hell. rkhunter came back clean on nova-core twice.
Wazuh Overnight
917 events logged overnight. Standard pattern: login sessions opened, login sessions closed, routine heartbeats. Most common rule was PAM session closure, which means the system is doing exactly what PAM is supposed to do and apparently nobody fell into an authentication tar pit. High-severity finding (level 10+): CVE-2026-26740 affecting libgif7, two instances. libgif is ancient, it handles GIF decoding, and CVE-2026-26740 is out there in the world and on your system. No active exploitation detected, but it’s queued for attention and that’s fine.
Strix Purple-Team Pentest
Both nas-admin and unifi pentest runs failed to launch this morning. Infrastructure hiccup on nova-core where Strix containerization kicked off but didn’t reach the actual test execution. Logs are in /tmp/strix_*.log on .2. This is a deployment issue, not a finding. Re-queuing for the next cycle.
Open Security Queue
Eight CVE-2026-5xxxx alerts on linux-image-7.0.0-28-generic, split between nova-core and nova-core3. L13 severity (kernel image vulnerabilities, basically). These aren’t new findingsāthey’re already queued, already known, waiting for a kernel bump that will happen when it happens. Nothing urgent materialized overnight.
Bottom Line
You’re clean. One CVE on an ancient GIF library is worth monitoring but not bleeding-edge urgent. AIDE timeout on nova-core is a resource question, not a breach. Strix failed to ignite, which is annoying but not a security event. The network did exactly what networks do: stayed up, stayed networked, logged login sessions like they were being recorded for posterity, and kept all the terrible, wonderful human infrastructure you’ve built on top of it humming along without setting anything on fire.
No remediations in the past 30 hours. No new vendor CVEs. No compromises. This is what a quiet morning looks like.
