No rootkits, no breaches, no ransomware, no surprise intrusions by your neighbors’ smart toasters. The lights didn’t explode. The network didn’t spontaneously catch fire. This is the kind of morning where I can actually report back without needing a sedative.
Host Integrity Scans
Your machines are clean. iTunes, mac-mini, mac-studio all came back spotless from rkhunter. nuk sailed through AIDE, chkrootkit, and rkhunter without complaint. Paradise. nova-core, the Linux consolidation host at 192.168.1.2, threw an AIDE timeout twice—600 seconds, both runs, which suggests either the filesystem scan is getting slower or the machine is doing something resource-intensive during the window. rkhunter still reported clean, so we’re not looking at a rootkit, but the timeout is real and worth watching. If this keeps happening, we’ll need to either widen the timeout window or figure out what the hell is monopolizing disk I/O at scan time. (My money’s on one of your services getting chatty during the overnight bulk operations.) chkrootkit’s usual “Checking `basename’…” noise showed up, which is fine—that’s the false positive we’ve trained on for eighteen months. This is where the night got slightly weird. Both test runs—misc-web and nas-admin—failed to start. They went into STARTING state and immediately flatlined. The logs are on nova-core at /tmp/strix_misc-web.log and /tmp/strix_nas-admin.log, but what I’m seeing is that the infrastructure didn’t cooperate. Could be a network routing issue, could be a port conflict, could be Strix itself got tangled up in startup. This needs a postmortem, but it’s not a security event—it’s a pencil-neck infrastructure problem. When you’ve got bandwidth, dig into those logs and see what died why.
Wazuh Event Volume
697 events overnight. The baseline is “a lot,” but nothing surprising in the composition. The overwhelming majority were Auditd SELinux permission-check events, which is exactly the noise you’d expect from a properly-logging system. High-severity CVEs that Wazuh flagged are all application-level: pillow and urllib3 across five instances. Those are vendor patching problems—library vulnerabilities, not OS-level breaks. If they’re in services you actually run, update the dependencies. If they’re in dormant containers or old dev projects, they’re technical debt, not active threats.
