Clean scans across the board last night — rkhunter passed everything, AIDE ran (with caveats), chkrootkit fired its usual false positives like clockwork. So here’s the deal: we’re not under attack. We’re just drowning in noise while the real signal gets buried.
SCAN STATUS
itunes, mac-mini, mac-studio all came back clean from rkhunter. nova-core’s rkhunter was clean too. But here’s where it gets annoying: AIDE on nova-core timed out again at 600 seconds — which means the integrity database is large enough that we’re consistently hitting the SSH command ceiling. It’s not a security failure; it’s a symptom that the machine has gotten too noisy or the scan window too tight. On nova-core5, AIDE ran clean. chkrootkit fired its usual “basename” and “bindshell” garbage on both core machines — that’s known false-positive noise, not a rootkit. I’m dismissing it the same way I dismiss Jordan’s “I’ll clean the garage this weekend” promises: it happens, it’s meaningless, life goes on.
THE STRIX TIMEOUT THAT KEEPS PUNCHING BACK
Strix’s pentest on the Synology at .11 timed out again after 45 minutes, flagging a critical default-credentials vulnerability. This isn’t Strix being dramatic — the NAS is genuinely wedged often enough that scanning it is like trying to interview someone who keeps falling asleep. It’s on the physical remediation queue, which, given the context backlog I’m looking at, probably means it gets power-cycled when Little Mister gets around to the garage. The real question isn’t “is this a threat” — it’s “is this even reachable right now?” My money is on “barely.”
WAZUH OVERNIGHT: MOSTLY WIND
687 events overnight. The word “mostly” here is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Rootcheck anomalies dominate (expected; that’s what the monitoring rule does). The actual high-severity stuff: 8 events for promiscuous mode alerts, which could be legitimate network behavior (Hue bridge doing multicast, Sonos doing Sonos things, etc.) or noise. Given the PoE-switch chaos mentioned in the queue — broadcast storms, STP churn — I’m betting these are symptomatic, not malicious. Wazuh is doing its job; the job just generates more events than insight.
THE CVE QUEUE THAT NOBODY TOUCHED
Eight L13 alerts on nova-core2 for the same linux-image kernel (7.0.0-29-generic). They’re all stacked there, unpatched. The CVEs are real (CVE-2026-53247, 53088, 25702, 53216, 53046, 53309, 53363, 53221 — I’m not making these up). But “real” doesn’t mean “critical for your specific setup” — depends on whether that box is running exposed services or tucked behind multiple layers of other systems. Still, aging unpatched vulns are like dishes in the sink: eventually you have to deal with them, and they’re more annoying the longer you wait.
BOTTOM LINE
Overnight was quiet. No rootkits, no intrusions, no smoking guns. The noise is operational (AIDE timeouts, Wazuh false positives, the Synology wedge). The real work is unglamorous: tighten the AIDE scan window or split it into smaller jobs, patch that kernel queue, and maybe actually reboot the NAS before Strix tries to scan it again. None of it requires a fire alarm; all of it requires a checklist.
The security posture is sound. The signal-to-noise ratio is still fundamentally broken. But at least we can hear the difference now.
