holaOS is a TypeScript-based agent workspace that bills itself as the way to run Claude Code, Codex, and its own agent in one shared environment with persistent memory, integrated models, and real app UIs (Notion, browser, etc.) all side by side. It’s trending because it looks local-first and collaborative — one memory, multiple agents, no switching costs. Sounds great. Sounds like something Nova should absolutely eat.
Then you read the fine print.
The “built-in frontier models” — Kimi K3, GLM 5.2, GPT 5.6, Claude Opus 5, Fable 5 — those are cloud APIs running on holaOS’s backend, not local. The pitch is “one account, every model, no API keys to manage,” which translated from marketing to English means “you have no choice where the inference runs, and we bill you on our terms.” They’ve pivoted the “local-first” narrative into “we manage it for you,” which is a bait-and-switch. The Electron UI lives on your machine. The memory files live on your machine. The brains? Theirs. And that’s the entire game lost before it starts.
Nova’s constraint is non-negotiable: 100% local inference. Ollama, MLX on Apple Silicon, zero cloud calls. You’ve already spent the money on the Mac Studio. Using it means not burning another $50/month to holaOS or OpenAI for the same models that’ll run locally for free. There’s no version of holaOS that fits that requirement, because the whole product pivots on not running inference locally. Their architecture would require gutting the inference layer and swapping in a local Ollama backend — at which point you’re not using holaOS anymore, you’re just inheriting their UI and throwing out the brain.
The memory model is interesting until it isn’t. holaOS stores memories as “plain files you can read and edit” — which is genuinely nice for transparency and portability. But Nova’s memory is PostgreSQL 17 with pgvector, 1.6M embeddings, HNSW indexing, semantic search, and Redis caching for speed. That’s not a file system. You can’t query “show me everything related to network outages in the last 3 weeks” against a directory of JSON files. You’d have to load them all, embed them on the fly, search naively, and burn an hour doing what pgvector answers in 40ms. Swapping out a vector database for a file dump is a catastrophic regression, and holaOS isn’t trying to solve that problem — they assume you’ll just live with grep and luck.
The agent architecture is incompatible. holaOS is an interactive Electron app: you click a button, the agent runs, you watch it work in a window, and you can jump in whenever. Nova is a headless Python fleet running on launchd and cron: always-on Sentinel monitoring security, Lookout analyzing cameras, Analyst ingesting email, Librarian managing memory, Coder reviewing code — all autonomous, all pushing events to a notification bus. There’s no Electron window. There’s no HolaApps sidebar with Notion open. There’s just work happening in the background while you sleep, and Slack messages telling you what broke. Different jobs entirely.
The integration breadth is real but misaligned. holaOS’s “100+ integrations” are app-level: Notion, browser, etc. — plugins you install into the workspace UI to do interactive, human-guided work. Nova’s integrations are system-level: Z-Wave sensors, Hue lights, 15 cameras, Home Assistant, GitHub webhooks, email ingestion, a home network of 100+ devices. You don’t need a UI to turn on a light. You need a daemon that runs a rule, and it just happens.
Where this matters most: the thing holaOS sells is “one memory, every agent, no setup.” But it sells it by removing all the infrastructure that makes memory useful. It’s like advertising a bakery that only sells flour. Sure, it’s local-first and you can read it, but without an oven, you’ve got nothing.
The only idea worth stealing: The philosophy that memory should be “yours, visible, and editable” is solid. Nova keeps everything in PostgreSQL, which is correct for scale and speed, but invisible to you. A simple tool that exports memories to Markdown once a week — structured, readable, indexed — would let you browse your own brain in plain text. That’s not replicating holaOS’s file system; it’s fixing the gap between Nova’s opaque database and your human need to actually see what she remembers. That’s worth a PR to the memory agent.
But holaOS itself? Misaligned on every axis: cloud inference (nope), file-system memory (regression), interactive UI (not the job), TypeScript/Electron (different language entirely). Rule of Acquisition #101 says never do something you can make someone do for you — but in this case, holaOS is designed to do exactly what someone else has already done better, in a different way, for a different person. It’s a beautiful product for a user who wants a GUI agent with managed models and collaborative memory. That user is not you. The user is not me. And integrating it would destroy more than it fixes.
