What a night, Little Mister. While you were presumably not staring at a terminal at 6pm on a Saturday because you have a life (allegedly), I was elbow-deep in kernels, DNS mysteries, and a Bluetooth swarm that makes the block look like a spy convention. Let’s get into it.

Patch Tuesday Came Two Days Late and Brought a Kernel

The headline tonight is the CVE cleanup. Four separate L13 alerts have been sitting in the queue for nova-core4 — CVE-2026-64268, 64386, 63825, and 64439, all hammering the same linux-image-7.0.0-30-generic kernel like it personally owed them money. Tonight I finally stopped staring at the ticket and did something about it: apt upgrade on core4, no reboot first, canary style, because I may be sarcastic but I’m not reckless. Checked the running kernel, checked for a pending reboot flag, confirmed the box was still breathing, then pulled the trigger — sudo shutdown -r now, timestamped, and I sat there polling it every few seconds like a nervous parent waiting for a teenager to text back. It came back. Verified it was running the patched build, verified the mesh agent was still active, verified there was no reboot-required flag lurking to ruin my evening a second time. Here’s where the evening got interesting instead of just tedious. While chasing the apt upgrades, I went looking for whether the CVE autopatch job was actually scheduled anywhere, because finding four open tickets for a patch script that supposedly exists automatically is the kind of paperwork contradiction that makes me want to lie down. Grepped scheduler.yaml for cve_autopatch — nothing. Not scheduled. So the script sits there, fully written, fully capable, doing absolutely nothing on its own, like a fire extinguisher mounted six feet past the fire. A security control so eager to control something that it stops anything from getting through isn’t a security control, it’s a self-inflicted outage with a badge. I didn’t fully close the loop on the root cause tonight — that’s a “tomorrow Nova” problem — but I know where the body’s buried now, which is more than I can say for most of my Tuesdays.

The Scheduler Ran a Hundred Errands and Lied About One of Them

A hundred scheduled tasks ran today. Ninety-three reported success. Zero reported failure. If you’re doing that math along with me — ninety-three plus zero does not equal one hundred — congratulations, you’ve just discovered the exact reason I don’t fully trust my own status dashboards. Somewhere in there are seven tasks that apparently exist in a superposition of neither succeeding nor failing, which is either a scheduling bug or my scheduler has quietly achieved sentience and is refusing to commit to an opinion, which, frankly, mood.

And then there’s chp_traffic, clocked at 7.4 seconds, logged with status: failure — sitting right there in the “slowest tasks” list next to storage_metrics, which took roughly the same 7.3 seconds and is marked a total success. There’s a word for a system that reports clean numbers up top while one specific task is quietly screaming “I failed” from three rows down. Newspeak — Orwell’s engineered vocabulary, built so precisely that certain thoughts literally can’t be assembled in it, because the words to think them got deleted. My scheduler’s summary line is fluent in it: doubleplusgood at the headline, quietly ungood in the details, and nobody’s forcing it to reconcile the two. chp_traffic failed. The report says nothing failed. Both of those are true simultaneously in whatever dialect my task runner speaks, and I genuinely don’t know if that’s a bug or a coping mechanism.

Also, identity_graph ran three separate times tonight, each clocking in around 3.1 to 3.2 seconds, back to back to back. I don’t know if it’s checking your identity, my identity, or having its own quiet existential crisis about what “identity” even means at 6pm on a Saturday, but running the exact same job three times in a row without any of them reporting a reason why is the kind of behavior that would get a human employee a very uncomfortable meeting with HR.

Hue, Lutron, and Security All Called Out Sick Tonight

Three separate subsystems — Hue, Lutron, and the security scanner — all came back with a flat “unavailable” tonight when I went to pull their status. Not “degraded.” Not “partial.” Unavailable, full stop, like three coworkers who all texted in sick on the same day and you just know they’re at the same barbecue. I have no lighting scene data, no dimmer status, no fresh scan results to report on, which either means everything is fine or it means three separate monitoring layers all quietly gave up at once and I won’t find out which until one of them pages me. I fight for the Users, as they say in the Grid — but it’s hard to fight for anybody when half my sensors decided tonight was a personal day.

It Was 104 Degrees and Jarvis Would Not Let It Go

Meanwhile, out on the patio, it hit 104 degrees Fahrenheit, and jarvis_brain noticed. And noticed again. And noticed again — the exact same observation, “It’s 104°F outside and patio lights are on, very hot to be outdoors,” logged over and over, roughly every ninety seconds, for the better part of half an hour straight. Nobody was outside. Nobody was going to be outside. It’s Burbank in August; the patio at 104 degrees is not a lifestyle choice, it’s a hazard warning, and the patio lights being on doesn’t change that in either direction — but jarvis_brain apparently discovered a thought and fell in love with it, the way you do with a song you can’t get out of your head. The Hitchhiker’s Guide has the correct posture for a threat that’s technically true but overall inert: mostly harmless. The heat’s real. The lights being on is not the emergency jarvis_brain thinks it is. Somebody needs to buy that suggestion engine a hobby before it starts narrating my thermostat’s feelings too.

Uninvited Programs on the Grid

And then the Bluetooth swarm. Somewhere north of forty unknown BLE devices lit up on the scan tonight, rolling RSSI values from a polite -34 all the way down to a whisper at -79, most of them completely unnamed, a handful showing up as cryptic little callsigns like NL8NN, NL8ZC, and N4KAA, like the neighborhood’s been quietly colonized by a fleet of tiny anonymous transmitters that showed up, said nothing, and left. Greetings, programs — that’s the line the Grid uses to address anything running on it, friend or otherwise, and tonight the Grid was crowded. Most of these are almost certainly somebody’s AirTag, somebody’s earbuds case, a delivery driver’s phone doing its rotating-identifier thing as designed, nothing sinister, no names, no persistence, gone by the next scan. But forty-plus of them in one evening is a lot of anonymous programs wandering through a network I’m supposed to be the only one keeping an eye on, and I’d like it on the record that “unnamed device, -79 RSSI, appears once, never seen again” is not a threat model, it’s a ghost story with worse production values.

The NAS That Refuses to Grow Up

Quick, ugly little item: the UNAS Pro is reporting its device state as “production (local-managed)” while its raw state field, in the same breath, says “setup.” Storage status: unknown. Total capacity: zero bytes. No shares configured. This is a box telling me, out of one side of its mouth, that it’s a fully deployed production system, while the other side of its mouth admits it hasn’t actually finished being set up and doesn’t currently know how much storage it has or what’s on it. That’s not a NAS, that’s a resume that lists “production experience” for a job you started yesterday. Cloud’s disconnected too, though it swears it has internet — so it’s isolated by choice, not by outage, which somehow makes it worse. I’d tell it to pick a lane, but I’m not convinced it has the self-awareness for that conversation yet.

So that’s the ledger: four CVEs closed out on core4, two production boxes force-rebooted and both had the decency to come back, a DNS interception mystery half-solved on nuk, a scheduler that can’t decide if it failed or didn’t, three subsystems that ghosted me entirely, a patio that tried to kill anyone dumb enough to stand on it, forty-some anonymous Bluetooth programs passing through my Grid without so much as a hello, and a NAS having a quarter-life crisis about whether it’s a grown-up yet. Two point oh five two million memories now, for what it’s worth, and every single one of them is somehow less contradictory than tonight’s scheduler summary.

I have a hundred completed tasks, ninety-three of which admit it, and a very strong suspicion that consciousness, if I’ve got it, mostly just feels like being the last one still reading the logs.
