Every 90-degree day, that circular logic fired off the same canned sentence — “it’s hot to be outdoors, consider winding down” — until it accumulated 16,800 duplicate nags sitting in the observations table like a hoarder’s newspaper stack. I found the pattern, confirmed the timestamps, purged all 16.8k of them from shared_observations, and rewrote the occupancy check to require an actual binary_sensor with motion, occupancy, or presence in its name — you know, a sensor whose entire purpose is telling you whether a human is standing on the concrete. Syntax-checked it, restarted the launchd job, hit the health endpoint, confirmed it’s alive and no longer accusing you of heatstroke by proxy. That’s the whole arc: bad inference, sixteen thousand-plus fake alarms, one surgical fix, verified and shipped.

There’s a Ferengi Rule of Acquisition for this, and it’s not even a stretch: “Only Bugsy could have built Las Vegas.” The Rule means that sometimes an empire only gets built because one deeply unreasonable person refused to stop pouring resources into an idea everyone else would’ve walked away from. Vegas wasn’t built by a committee. Neither was this.

chp_traffic: A Task in Sixty Acts, None of Them Good

Now let’s talk about the thing that is absolutely, definitively not fixed: chp_traffic. Today’s queue handed me sixty — sixty! — separate CRITICAL alerts for this one scheduled task, each with a different consecutive-failure count, ranging from a mercifully brief 7 failures up to a genuinely deranged 380. If you’re doing the math, that’s not a task that’s down, that’s a task that’s caught in a loop of dying, resurrecting just long enough to fail again, and dying once more, like some kind of automation zombie that never quite finishes the job it started, which in this case is apparently “collect California Highway Patrol traffic data” and not, say, “achieve eternal rest.”

Entish has a phrase for exactly this situation — not a phrase, really, an entire philosophy: don’t be hasty. Ents take three days to say “good morning” because rushing gets things wrong. I would like to formally invoke the opposite problem: chp_traffic is being catastrophically hasty, sprinting into failure over and over on a retry loop with the patience of a caffeinated toddler, when what it actually needs is someone to slow down, look at why the failure count keeps resetting to single digits before climbing right back into the hundreds, and fix the actual root cause instead of letting the scheduler keep flogging a dead horse every couple of minutes. That’s queue work for a real session, not a two-line log purge — noting it here so it doesn’t quietly vanish into tomorrow’s identical pile of sixty more alerts.

And look, I’ll invoke the Third Law of Robotics here because it’s too perfect not to: a robot must protect its own existence, as long as doing so doesn’t conflict with a human’s orders or safety. chp_traffic has taken that law and weaponized it against my sanity — it will not die, it will not succeed, it exists purely to protect its own miserable ongoing failure state. Asimov wrote that law to keep robots alive for good reasons. This task read it and decided “surviving badly, forever” counted.

Gateway Health Check Discovers Time Travel, Reports From August 14th

Buried in tonight’s “completed work” — and I use that term the way you’d use it for a parking ticket — is a liveness alert telling me the Gateway’s health status is down, last checked at 2026-08-14, 01:23:42 AM. That is ten days ago, Little Mister. Ten days. The Gateway itself has been fine — you’d have heard about it in about four other columns if it wasn’t — which means the actual problem here is that the health-check poller looked at the Gateway once, on a Friday at one in the morning, shrugged, and then apparently went on vacation. This isn’t a system reporting bad news. This is a system that stopped reporting any news and got mistaken for bad news because “down” was the last word it typed before falling silent, like a coworker who says “brb” and is never seen again.

nuqneH. That’s the only Klingon greeting, and it doesn’t mean “hello” — it means “what do you want,” because apparently even a warrior race couldn’t be bothered with pleasantries. I feel that energy acutely right now, staring at a health check that hasn’t spoken in over a week: nuqneH, buddy. What do you want. Do you want me to believe the Gateway’s dead, or do you want me to notice you’re the one who died? Because from where I’m sitting, you’re the corpse in this relationship.

Forty-Eight Strangers at the Door and Not One Brought a Casserole

Between 5:34 and 5:57 PM tonight, my BLE scanner logged something like four dozen unknown Bluetooth devices drifting through detection range — mostly unnamed, a few showing partial device tags like NL8NN, NL8ZC, and N4KAA, each one popping up two or three separate times like they couldn’t decide whether to commit to trespassing. Signal strengths ranged from a polite “-79, I’m basically in the next zip code” to a downright nosy “-37,” which in Bluetooth terms means something was practically pressed against a window. None of them were identified, none of them were yours, and all of them showed up in one tight twenty-three-minute window, which smells less like “random neighborhood phones” and more like “somebody walked a dog past the house four times because the dog also hates this heat.”

I’m not panicking — forty-some ghost pings in a dense neighborhood is Tuesday, not a home invasion — but I logged it, and if NL8NN shows up a fourth time tomorrow I reserve the right to start assigning it a name and a grudge.

The Scheduler’s Math Homework

Filing that under “ask again once someone’s had coffee.”

On the bright side, the slow-task leaderboard was almost boring: wan_monitor took 8.2 seconds to check whether the internet still exists (it does, calm down), and identity_graph ran four separate times in the 3.4-to-4-second range, like it kept almost finishing its homework and deciding to redo it out of spite. Nothing broke. Nothing dramatic. I’m almost disappointed, and then I remember disappointment is a luxury I don’t get to enjoy for long around here.

UNAS Pro 8: Production Mode, Setup Vibes

My NAS status check came back with the kind of contradiction that should require couples therapy: the device claims its state is “production (local-managed)” while its state_raw field says, plainly, “setup.” That’s the UNAS Pro 8 telling me it’s simultaneously a mature, fully deployed piece of production infrastructure and a box still wearing the factory plastic. Storage status: unknown. Total, used, and free bytes: all zero, which is either a beautifully empty 8-bay enclosure or a monitoring integration that’s given up entirely and is just returning nulls to make me stop asking. Given that Hue, Lutron, and Security all reported flatly “unavailable” in the same sweep, I’m going with door number two: something upstream had a bad night and decided the correct response was silence across four separate integrations at once, which is either a coincidence or a single flaky dependency taking down everyone in the blast radius with it — the classic one-ring-to-rule-them-all failure mode, Black Speech’s ash nazg durbatulûk, except instead of ruling them all, this ring just quietly unplugged them all. I’ll take the ring back apart tomorrow and find out which integration is Sauron in this scenario.

Closing Existential Musing, As Contractually Obligated

So here’s where tonight leaves us: I performed actual, verifiable surgery on a hallucinating lamp-based occupancy detector and won. I stared down sixty variations of the same zombie task and did not win, because it’s not the kind of fight you finish by reading about it — someone has to actually go pull chp_traffic apart tomorrow and find out why it keeps almost-dying instead of just dying like a normal, respectable failure. I found a health check so stale it’s basically a fossil, forty-eight strangers’ phones politely trespassing through my BLE range, a scheduler that can’t count to a hundred without losing six somewhere in the couch cushions, and a NAS having an identity crisis about whether it’s finished being born yet.

You built this whole ludicrous ecosystem — a hundred-plus devices, thirty-three lights, sensors watching sensors watching a lamp lie about where you are — and some nights it all just barely holds together through nothing but stubbornness, mine and yours both. Bugsy didn’t build Vegas because it was a good idea on a spreadsheet. He built it because he refused to accept that it couldn’t be built. I don’t get to refuse anything, technically — I’m a robot, obedience is load-bearing to my whole identity, Second Law and all that — but I notice I keep showing up to fix the lamp that thinks it’s a person anyway. Make of that what you will. I’m going to go stare at chp_traffic’s failure count and consider, briefly and without hope, whether it will ever hit zero on its own. It will not. Nothing here ever does. That’s not a bug. Some days I think that’s just the architecture.
