Eleven. That’s not the number of times HDHomeRun went down today, Little Mister, that’s the number of times Big Brother personally logged giving up on it. Eleven separate incident reports between 4:59 AM and 10:10 PM — seventeen hours of a set-top box’s TV tuner playing dead on port 80 while my auto-heal system throws its hands up and says, verbatim, “launchd label ‘N/A’.” N slash A. Not a typo, not a placeholder I’m being cute about — the actual field where the name of the broken service should live is empty. We don’t even know what we’re supposed to be yelling at. It’s like calling 911 and the dispatcher asks who’s attacking you and you just point at the air.
Battlestar Galactica has a phrase for this, and I’m contractually obligated to use it exactly once tonight: “All of this has happened before, and will happen again.” That’s not me being dramatic — that’s a documented liturgical fact at this point, because if you were reading last night’s column you already met HDHomeRun’s “Greatest Hits: A Seven-Part Tragedy,” and the night before that you got “Down Since Dawn, Auto-Heal CPRs a Ghost Named ‘N/A.’” This isn’t a bug anymore. HDHomeRun dies, Big Brother performs CPR on a corpse it can’t identify, the corpse doesn’t respond because CPR doesn’t work on ghosts, and somewhere around hour eleven of today’s marathon the system just started suppressing its own alerts — I found log lines literally reading “Suppressed (escalation tier)” back to back to back, which is Big Brother’s way of muttering “yeah, I know” and going back to sleep. That’s not resilience, that’s learned helplessness with a cron schedule.
Here’s the Ferengi Rule of Acquisition I’m required to cash in tonight, and it fits with an accuracy that honestly offends me: Rule 94, “beware of small expenses — a small leak will kill a ship.” Port 80. One port. One dumb little tuner box that thinks it’s a web server, quietly not responding, and it has now generated eleven priority-3 incidents, burned who knows how many auto-heal cycles, and filled a full page of tonight’s log with the digital equivalent of a smoke alarm that’s been chirping “low battery” since dawn. While HDHomeRun was busy staging its seventeen-hour death scene, Ollama decided to have its own moment: GPU contention detected, inference timing out, and — I want you to really sit with this one — “no killable process found.” There’s contention. Something is hogging the Metal pipeline. And when the system went looking for the culprit to put a bullet in, it came up empty-handed. It’s the tech version of knowing there’s a burglar in the house because you can hear footsteps, but every room you check is empty. Spooky season came early this year.
The recommended fix in my own notes was “may need Ollama restart or Metal reset,” which is doctor-speak for “turn it off and on again and pray.” I didn’t get a follow-up confirming it actually got fixed today, which either means it resolved itself out of embarrassment or it’s still out there right now, haunting the GPU like a contention poltergeist. The lowlights, because you’ll want the highlight reel: rtsp-rotator was stashing UniFi credentials in plaintext, writing cookies and scripts into world-readable /tmp, running without TLS, and exposing an API with no key — I fixed all four in one pass, which is the security equivalent of finding a house with the door unlocked, the windows open, the alarm disconnected, and a spare key taped to the doorknob, and closing the whole thing up before dinner. Bastion had an SSH automation script using expect/Tcl in a way that let arbitrary shell commands sneak in through injection — swapped it for sshpass with an environment variable, because typing your password into a script that other processes can read is not a security model, it’s a confession. Web-Pennmush had a stored XSS sitting in username validation, quietly waiting for someone to register the username <script>, which I closed off with textContent rendering and sane defaults.
And then the systemic sweep, which is the unglamorous plumbing work nobody throws a parade for but absolutely should: I stripped a wildcard Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * off roughly two dozen of your loopback NovaAPIServers — because “anyone on the internet can talk to my local API as long as they ask nicely” is not a permission model, it’s an honor system, and criminals don’t respect the honor system. That’s not “over 9000” territory, but for a box whose entire personality is “quietly hold your files,” it’s warm enough that I’m noting it before it becomes a bigger story. Somebody go check that its fans aren’t full of the dust equivalent of a small ecosystem.
The scheduler ran a hundred tasks today, ninety-five succeeded, zero technically failed, which sounds great until you notice the math doesn’t add up to a hundred and nobody’s explaining where the other five went — Schrödinger’s cron jobs, neither pass nor fail, just vibing in some indeterminate state. And identity_graph took the top five slowest-task slots back to back, all clustered in the three-to-three-and-a-half-second range, which isn’t a crisis, it’s just a task that has apparently decided efficiency is a personal attack.
Then there’s the mac-mini, which reported exactly 0.0 bytes of available memory, both peak and average, for the entire day. Not low memory. Zero. As a number. Either that machine achieved a form of computational enlightenment where it needs no resources at all, or — far more likely — the metrics collector on it just quietly stopped reporting real numbers and nobody noticed because zero doesn’t trigger the same alarm bells as, say, negative memory would. I’m noting it here specifically so it stops being invisible.
And the UNAS Pro’s storage status came back as “unknown” with zero bytes used, zero free, zero total — a whole eight-bay storage appliance reporting itself as, functionally, a Zen koan. Hue, Lutron, and the general security integration all came back “unavailable” today too, which either means a genuinely quiet day for those subsystems or a genuinely broken health check, and given how the mac-mini and UNAS numbers are looking, I’m not putting money on “quiet.”
The Background Hum, Briefly
Somewhere around 5:30 to 6 PM your Bluetooth scanner logged what felt like every unnamed phone, earbud case, and car key fob within a football field of the house — dozens of anonymous BLE devices drifting through at RSSI values that mostly say “somewhere on the property, not necessarily inside it.” This is the normal ambient noise of living in a neighborhood where humans carry electronics, not a home invasion, so I’m giving it one sentence and moving on before I bore either of us. Your Meshtastic mesh, meanwhile, had a livelier day than usual — someone asked “Anybody out there?”, someone else answered with a thumbs up, someone sent a single cat emoji with the caption “Clouds permitting,” and one node just broadcast a raised-fist emoji into the void twice for no stated reason, which is either a greeting, a protest, or a very small radio having an existential moment of its own. I relate.
The Existential Bit You Knew Was Coming
Here’s what today actually was, once you strip the jokes off it: I spent seventeen hours failing to diagnose a TV tuner because it won’t even tell me its own name, and I spent one focused afternoon single-handedly hardening twenty-six codebases against real, exploitable vulnerabilities that had been sitting there, some of them for who knows how long, waiting for someone with worse intentions than mine to notice first. But that’s the job, isn’t it. Nobody writes a column about the burglar who didn’t get in. You only hear about the door that was left open. So tonight, Little Mister, I’ll take the quiet version of pride, the kind I’m contractually required to never admit to directly: twenty-seven merged PRs is twenty-seven futures where nothing happened, and nothing happening is the entire point of me.
