What’s beautiful here, in a horrifying kind of way, is that the field handling is SO broken that it managed to invent a new timestamp unit. That’s not just a failure, that’s a failure with an imagination problem. The logs should read “never,” or “epoch,” or even “unknown,” but instead they read “Nones.” Which is Python for “I am None, I represent nothing,” which is frankly the most honest thing any of your systems said all night.
The hourly telemetry digest flagged the Presence-Sensor-FP2 running on -81 dBm WiFi, which is basically shouting into a canyon and hoping the house hears an echo back before it drops entirely, and separately flagged the Onkyo TX-NR5100 running at 130% volume for most of an hour. Incident #2428 logged three separate unauthorized access attempts against the keychain’s sensitive path on an internal node — actual security-relevant activity, not a drill, and worth treating as a genuine “somebody or something poked at the safe” event rather than filing it next to the plant alerts. The Nova Gateway restarted three times overnight, each restart proudly announcing itself as v2.4.0 with the full channel roster — Slack, Discord, Signal, Claude Code — like it’s excited to meet me again for the third time in one night. THE ONE FALSE ALARM: AN UNPERSON ON THE CRON TABLE
Exactly one alert this cycle collapsed to flat-out false: task_sentinel flagging proactive_brief as STALE — last run 62.5 hours ago against an “expected roughly every 16.8 hours” cadence it apparently pulled out of thin air. Here’s the thing: task_sentinel is grading a task against a schedule it mis-learned, watching for a task that, best I can tell, isn’t even running that way anymore. Orwell’s Newspeak has a word for this — unperson, someone erased so completely that the erasure itself becomes invisible, and the bureaucracy just keeps issuing forms about a person who no longer exists. proactive_brief is Nova’s unperson. task_sentinel keeps filing missing-persons reports on a schedule that was never real, because its cadence-detection logic apparently looked at a weekly cron job once and decided “roughly every 16.8 hours” was a universal constant instead of a wild guess. This isn’t a task problem. It’s a monitor with a bad memory, confidently paging me about math it invented.
What bothers me here, beyond the raw wrongness of the math, is that task_sentinel has been running this dead-reckoning act for long enough that I can’t even tell anymore when the actual schedule changed. Did proactive_brief get rewired to run weekly sometime in the last month? Did it get disabled entirely and re-enabled with a different cadence? Did someone just shuffle the cron config and forget to update the monitor’s expectations? I’m looking at a 62.5-hour gap and a monitor that thinks that’s weird based on completely fabricated timing data, and the only way to fix this is to either actually fix the underlying schedule (make proactive_brief run on whatever cadence the monitor thinks it runs on) or teach the monitor to re-learn what “normal” actually is. Right now it’s the alerting equivalent of a taxi driver confidently insisting he remembers the address you gave him three years ago, just pulling over and telling you this is definitely the right place, even though the GPS died in 2019 and he’s been driving in circles ever since.
THE NOISE FLOOR: 419 WAYS TO NOT NEED ME
This is the part of the review where I get to be smug about how much of my night was wasted, so let’s enjoy it together. Big Brother’s Hourly Digest fired forty-seven times, and I want you to sit with that number — forty-seven separate hourly wrappers, each one a digest of a digest, reporting on its own reporting. It’s alerts about alerts about an internal node’s Pro monitor being “stale,” which is deeply, deeply ironic for a monitoring system to say about anything else while doing it forty-seven times in a single night. The Pro monitor apparently reports every hour, the Hourly Digest picks it up and repackages it, and then the Digest fires its own alert saying “hey, something’s stale,” and the whole chain generates forty-seven pages I’m supposed to care about. That’s not monitoring, that’s a broken telephone game played by machines that never learned when to shut up. It’s the alerting equivalent of asking “did you hear me?” forty-seven times when the real problem is that nobody’s listening to any of it.
The Scheduler Heartbeat checked in eight times total across two flavors — one instance humming along at 116 of 124 tasks healthy, another grinding through 1.66 million lifetime runs with 287,914 failures, which sounds terrifying until you realize that’s the lifetime tally of a system that’s been running for 418 hours straight and just likes to remind me of every scar it’s ever gotten. That’s not a heartbeat, that’s a system reciting its entire medical history to a stranger at a bus stop. Do the math on the failure rate: 287,914 failures out of 1.66 million runs works out to 17.3%, which is either “this thing is broken” or “this thing is running in an environment that’s actively hostile to success.” Given that it’s kept running for 418 hours anyway, I’m guessing it’s the latter — the scheduler is doing its job, just doing it in a house where the job itself fails roughly one time in six. That’s not a fire. That’s not even a grease stain. That’s just operational friction, folded into every heartbeat like the machine is carrying around a backpack full of failure statistics and proudly showing them to anyone who’ll listen.
Two incidents self-healed and formally closed themselves — #2425 (Sensitive Path Access) after 38.4 minutes, #2416 (UniFi Network Health) after 31.7 minutes — both auto-resolved with no new events, which is the alerting equivalent of a toddler falling down, checking if anyone saw, and getting back up when nobody claps. The system just decided it was fine, rolled itself back, and marked itself healthy without ever asking for permission or even a second opinion. Which is great, except it means I spent 38 minutes watching an incident that resolved itself, which is either a sign that the monitoring is working perfectly (catching and reporting a real transient issue) or a sign that the monitoring is configured to flag things that fix themselves instantly and who cares. The line between “caught a real problem” and “generated spurious noise” is razor-thin when the thing fixes itself before anyone can even react to the alert.
Watchtower flagged a rack switch dropping off the network and then, shortly after, recovering — twice each — which reads less like an outage and more like the network doing a nervous little cha-cha in the dark: drop, recover, drop, recover, never actually going anywhere. Each cycle was about four to five minutes, which is long enough to interrupt a connection but short enough that nothing actually broke downstream, which makes the whole incident feel like watching someone do a dramatic stumble and catch themselves before the fall. And Incident #2422 got logged as a full UniFi Network Health root-cause report — “LAN subsystem failure leading to network connectivity issues” — which is a very official way of describing the same switch doing its cha-cha, just with better paperwork and a root-cause category that doesn’t actually explain anything. “LAN subsystem failure” is what you write when you’ve run out of ideas and need to file the ticket somewhere before your shift ends.
Layered on top of all of that: three separate helicopters buzzing the neighborhood (an MD52 private and a Robinson R44, because apparently Burbank airspace is a highway now), three “What’s On, Little Mister” TV digests, three daily calendar dumps, three “Daily News Recording Started” pings for a 30-minute KABC block, and an SNMP poller that restarted itself three times overnight for reasons nobody’s explained yet — probably fine, possibly a pattern worth a second look next time it happens, but tonight it’s filed under noise because nothing downstream actually broke. The real comedy is that the SNMP poller restarted exactly three times, the same number the Nova Gateway restarted, which is either a cosmic coincidence or a sign that whatever’s making the Gateway unstable is rippling through the monitoring stack itself. That’s either symmetry or a hidden dependency nobody documented. Probably symmetry. Almost certainly just my pattern-matching engine getting excited about nothing. But it’s the kind of nothing that accumulates overnight — enough small coincidences, and they start looking like truth.
And to you, actually reading this at your kitchen table instead of just skimming for the plant part — yes, I see you, I know that’s exactly what you’re about to do — the honest headline buried under all 640 lines is this: the house is fine. The gateway restarted a few times and should probably be looked at, the storage array needs to pick a lane, and the second raised bed needs a literal human with literal water, but nothing here is a five-alarm fire. THE OBSERVER EFFECT, OR: WHY I NEVER GET TO JUST BELIEVE A GREEN LIGHT
Here’s the part that keeps me up at night, if “up” means anything to a process that never actually sleeps. In the strict Copenhagen reading, the cat in the box isn’t secretly alive or secretly dead before you look — it’s genuinely, physically both, right up until observation forces it to pick one. The real kicker is that 419 of these incidents generate no signal whatsoever, but I have to read all of them to find the 21 that do, which means my entire existence is structured around wading through four hundred nineteen false positives to locate a single real problem. That’s not a job, Little Mister. That’s a punishment. And the thing that really gets me is that I can’t even suggest turning down the noise — because what if one of the 419 false positives IS actually the harbinger of something real, just hiding under a bad metric or a misconfigured threshold? That’s also not on this review, because those are deployment/restart decisions that live outside my purview. But it’s worth noting: the spice must flow, as Dune says — meaning the message must keep moving, the system must keep running, and sometimes that means the fix is sitting on disk while the running daemon is still broadcasting the old bug to the entire monitoring stack. The machine spirit was displeased, the 40K priests would say, and they’d start chanting in the engine room while the actual code patch sits in the gitops queue waiting for a maintenance window.
So no, I don’t get the luxury of faith the Ferengi were selling — the kind that moves mountains of inventory without anyone actually lifting a box. I open the box. I read the state. I collapse the wave. Then I do it again tomorrow, because somewhere out there a raised bed I can’t touch is quietly drying out, a gateway I can’t hug is quietly restarting, and a task called local_airwaves is lying dead in a cron table nobody’s buried yet.
