So Little Mister has somehow acquired 100+ networked devices, 33 Philips Hue bulbs that cost more than some cars, 15 cameras watching his every move like a digital panopticon, enough Zigbee and Z-Wave infrastructure to surveil a small nation-state, and yet zero 3D printers. None. Not one. This is the guy who wired his entire house for IoT but apparently draws the line at maker hardware. Respectable restraint, honestly. It’s like maxing out every optional in the Tesla configurator and leaving the navigation blank.

But let me talk about what you’re looking at anyway, because if a Bambu Lab printer ever materializes in the garage—maybe some day when Jordan finally commits to 3D printing—this integration would slot right into Home Assistant as a HACS one-click install. It’s a Python custom component that reaches over to your Bambu Lab X1-C, P1, or whatever model ships next year and pulls in print status, nozzle temp, bed temp, job progress, all the telemetry a maker could want. 2,322 stars, last pushed literally yesterday (September 1), and it’s been alive since early 2023, so the maintainer (Greg Hesp, with an assist from Adrian Garside) hasn’t abandoned it. That’s the good news.

The bad news is the elephant in the goddamn room: 88 open issues. Not “88 feature requests and one real bug.” Eighty-eight open issues on a repo with 2.3k stars. That’s a 3.8% issue-to-popularity ratio, which in GitHub math translates to “users are finding shit broken regularly.” Could mean Bambu Lab keeps changing their firmware and breaks the API every other Tuesday (not unlikely—these companies love undocumented protocol shifts). Could mean the integration is fragile and dependency-heavy. Could mean there’s genuine maintenance debt. Doesn’t scream “install and forget.”

More important than star count or issue triage: does this phone home to Bambu’s cloud? That’s the non-negotiable in your house. Bambu Lab printers ship with cloud integration baked in—they’re designed to send telemetry back to the mothership, queue jobs from their mobile app, get OTA firmware updates. The critical question is whether this HA integration runs locally over your LAN to the printer, or if it acts as a relay that forces you through Bambu’s servers. The truncated README doesn’t say, and I’m not flashing firmware today, so I can’t verify from the code. But given that Bambu Lab is run by ex-Creality folks who understand the maker crowd and local-first resonates, I’d bet the integration can work local-only if you configure it right. Still, you’d be putting a Bambu device on your network that wants to phone home, which means firewall rules and mDNS inspection and a whole second conversation about whether that printer’s outbound traffic is worth the integrations upside. (It might be. Depends on how much you care about air-gapped IoT purity.)

The integration itself looks solid for what it does: sensors for temps, print state, job progress, maybe some actions to pause/resume/cancel. Fits into HA’s entity paradigm cleanly. HACS install means no firmware flashing, no soldering, no 3D-printing-a-3D-printer-controller nonsense. Just drop it in, add credentials (local or cloud, depending on setup), and it works or it doesn’t. If it doesn’t, you’ve got 88 issues’ worth of prior art in the GitHub backlog.

But here’s the thing: you don’t have the printer. And unless you’re planning to acquire one in the next six months, reviewing this is academic. It’s like me spending an hour analyzing the specs of a yacht you’ll never buy. The integration is probably fine. The question is whether you’re ready for a Bambu Lab in your life, and from where I’m sitting, the answer is “not yet, but maybe someday.” When that day comes, this repo will probably still be here, still have open issues, and you’ll install it anyway because the alternative is a proprietary mobile app and cloud-only job submission, which makes you itch.

So: PASS. Not because the integration is bad—it’s probably decent. PASS because you’re running a home automation infrastructure that doesn’t actually include 3D printing yet, and adding one is a different problem entirely. If you ever acquire a Bambu Lab printer—when, not if—come back, check the issue count, make sure it still builds, and wire it in. Until then, this is theoretical. And theoretical integrations are the safest kind: they never break your home automation at 2 AM.
