Welcome to the morning after the night that tried so damn hard to kill something—and instead just gave my monitoring stack a stress fracture. One hundred and nine devices online, eleven switches wearing their enterprise APs like medals of valor, and a software audit that says “313 updates pending” like it’s a polite suggestion rather than a security debt accumulating interest. But before we talk about what you should be patching, let’s talk about why I can’t even reliably tell you what’s broken anymore.

RING 1 — YOUR NETWORK: The Inventory Still Breathes, The Diagnostics Don’t

The devices themselves? Humming along fine. Nine thousand, four hundred and fifty-six packages across seven reachable hosts. That’s not a number to celebrate; that’s a number to feel a low thrum of dread about. Thirty-seven wired clients behaving, forty-five wireless clients doing whatever the hell wireless clients do, twenty-seven cameras watching Burbank like an obsessive ex-boyfriend. Infrastructure is solid—PoE switches in every room because apparently “just power the things over the same cable” is Little Mister’s philosophy, and frankly I’m not mad about it.

But here’s where the night went sideways and took my credibility with it.

AIDE—the file-integrity checker that’s supposed to catch rootkits and tampering—is now reporting errors instead of results. nova-core timed out after 3,600 seconds (that’s one hour for those counting). nova-core3 did the same thing, apparently deciding that integrity checking was a quitter’s game. nova-core2 threw a read-only permissions error on its config file like a petulant daemon. These aren’t edge cases; they’re a pattern. Your integrity scanner is scanning nothing. It’s dead weight that reports failure, and a failure that doesn’t report is just noise wearing a suit.

Chkrootkit and rkhunter—the rootkit hunters—came back clean, which is fine, but they’re also the ones that don’t require five gigabytes of disk thrashing to prove they’re working. When the heavy guns jam, you’re left with lighter rounds, and that’s not confidence; that’s triage.

Strix, the purple-team pentest harness, got its ass handed to it by default credentials. Not some exotic zero-day. Not a firmware flaw nobody knows about. Default credentials. The Synology NAS sitting on 192.168.1.11 still answers to admin:admin. Your UniFi OS on the controller is the same. Both marked CRITICAL. Both timing out the scanner because they were so glaringly vulnerable the pentest got stuck trying to figure out which exploit to run first. Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #276: “If at first you don’t succeed, try to acquire again.” For a hacker, that means one poke gets you admin access, and the second poke gets you the rest of the house.

Wazuh overnight saw four hundred and forty-nine events—most of it rootcheck noise (which is fine), but two high-severity alerts flagged devices enabling promiscuous mode. That’s either a rogue SPAN session, a bridge configuration drift, or a host that’s decided to listen to all traffic on the wire. Could be benign. Could be someone giving themselves god-mode. I can’t tell because the scanner infrastructure is wheezing.

BLE unknowns keep phoning home. Seven unknowns detected in the last twelve hours, RSSI signals ranging from -42 to -77. None of them identifiable. Some are BeamO devices, some are just UUIDs in the dark. Night before last, you got the same thing. And the night before that. That’s either your neighborhood leaking into your airspace (increasingly possible in dense Burbank), or it’s persistent discovery that means something nearby is probing your stack. Hard to know which when your threat detection is failing silently.

RING 2 — YOUR GEAR’S EXPOSURE: Actually Pretty Clean

Here’s the good news that almost doesn’t matter right now. The updates pending on your actual machines are normal drift—docker, openssl, postgresql, signal-cli, lazygit, libgit2. Nothing screaming CVE emergency. AWS C libraries jumped from 0.x to 1.0.0 on mac-mini, which is a major version bump but likely stable. No advisories named your specific installed versions. No breach waiting in a known vulnerability. That’s actually the only ring where you’re not hemorrhaging.

RING 3 — BROADER LANDSCAPE: Academic Theatre

The noise floor is papers. ArXiv security research on adversarial ML, side-channel attacks, code-injection into smart contracts via LLM. Interesting if you’re the National Security Council. Irrelevant if you’re trying to figure out whether someone’s sniffing your Z-Wave traffic. SonicWall RCEs, PaperCut zero-days—none of them running in your stack. The wider cyber world is on fire; your specific house isn’t, yet.

RING 4 — GEOPOLITICS & INDUSTRIAL OT: The Distant Drum

Iran’s got UK plants offline. Taiwan’s warding off autonomous AI intrusion. The food and agriculture sector is watching three converging threats—AI, ransomware, nation-states—close in like sharks. None of this is your problem until it is. Background radiation.

THE PATTERN NOBODY WANTS TO ADMIT

Over fourteen days, you’ve had alerts about memory, noise, false positives, scanning infrastructure failing—and yesterday Strix caught the most basic vulnerability in the book while your own scanning infrastructure timeouts without catching anything. That’s not a security problem; that’s a diagnostic problem. Your monitors can’t monitor anymore, which means you’re flying blind with a dashboard full of broken gauges. That needs fixing before the next BLE ghost shows up and you have no way to know if it’s a neighbor or an intruder.

Time to rebuild AIDE, fix those default creds, and maybe admit that your scanning stack needs a reload.
