RING 1 — YOUR NETWORK

111 devices online across 11 switches and APs — which, on paper, looks like a thriving empire. In practice, it’s a vast kingdom where most of the subjects don’t report back, and the ones that do are either logging “half-configured Dpkg” (the digital equivalent of a smoke detector beeping at 3am) or vanishing into a BLE scan that only mac-studio bothers to run. The other three boxes with Bluetooth adapters? They’re just vibing, doing fuck-all to scan for unknown peripherals. Why bother when you’ve already got admin/admin waiting like a welcome mat in Home Assistant?

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: AIDE timeouts on nova-core, nova-core3, and nova-core5. Three hosts, three AIDE runs, all hitting the SSH command timeout at 3600 seconds and dying. That’s not a quirk — that’s a systemic shit-show. Nova-core5’s run was so pathetic it didn’t even produce real output (“output too short to be a real scan: 6:Erro…”). Meanwhile, chkrootkit and rkhunter are both clean, which is great, but we’re running an integrity checker that can’t complete, then declaring victory because the OTHER integrity checkers finished. That’s Newspeak: doubleplusgood reporting from a system that’s actually wedged. K’oyacyi to whoever configured that AIDE setup — hang in there, we’ll unfuck it eventually.

Strix purple-team results: both UniFi and Home Assistant hit the 45-minute hard cap and timed out. UniFi found nothing. Home Assistant found exactly one critical finding before the test died: Default Admin Credentials (admin/admin). Good news: we found something. Bad news: this has been flagged multiple times across the last week and still isn’t fixed. Also bad: the test couldn’t even finish. Wazuh saw zero related events — which tells you that event logging is useless when the real firing squad is running as a separate tool with its own timeout.

Wazuh overnight: 1028 events. Most common rule? Dpkg half-configured. That’s update noise, not security noise. The only real signal: two Auditd “Device enables promiscuous mode” alerts. Everything else is the digital equivalent of a printer screaming for toner at 2am. Here’s the thing about alerts: there’s a difference between reporting many things and reporting shit that matters. Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #200: “Achieve nothing, but achieve it with excellent formatting.” That’s Wazuh in a nutshell. A thousand beautifully formatted events, and the real fire is the one thing we’re too slow to find.

Hardware inventory: 14 USB devices across 8 hosts, Z-Wave controller on nova-core’s ttyUSB0, Bluetooth adapters on every box (but only mac-studio uses them). Notable: an unknown device showed up on 192.168.1.106, wired into Rack 15 — no hostname, no identification. Anything new in the USB hardware layer is a security signal. That needs to be identified right now.

Software audit: 9,476 packages across 7 reachable hosts, 400 updates pending:

  • mac-mini: 114 pending (out of 291 installed)
  • mac-studio: 112 pending (out of 305 installed)
  • nova-core3: 59 pending (out of 1314 installed)
  • nova-core2: 50 pending (out of 1734 installed)
  • nova-core: 39 pending (out of 1490 installed)
  • nova-core4: 26 pending (out of 1987 installed)
  • nova-core5: 0 pending (out of 2355 installed)

The Macs are behind. That’s the headline at RING 2.


RING 2 — EXPOSURE ON YOUR GEAR

mac-mini pending updates (114 total): awscurl, docker, lazygit, libgit2, openssl@3, postgresql@17, signal-cli. The security-critical ones are docker (29.6.2 → 29.8.0) and openssl@3 (3.6.3 → 3.6.4). Those are infrastructure pieces — if they’re vulnerable, everything burns. PostgreSQL is also sitting: 17.10 → 17.11.

mac-studio pending updates (112 total): same essentials — docker, lazygit, awscurl. Same docker exposure.

The good news: No CVEs/advisories name vendors you actually run. Zero hits on your gear right now. Not exciting, but clean.

The pattern this week: You’re not patching the Macs. Docker hasn’t moved since sometime before last Tuesday. If there’s a vulnerability in 29.6.2, it’s sitting there waiting. No excuse — these are Homebrew updates, not security backports. “I’ll handle it later” is apparently the stance.


RING 3 — BROADER CVEs

Windows, 5G research, CodeQL analysis, academic security theater — none of it touches your hardware. Microsoft Patch Tuesday keeps dropping 960+ CVEs per month (not your problem). Adobe Magento zero-days keep appearing (not your problem). MikroTik routers burning in the wild (you run UniFi, not MikroTik). Noise at this distance.


RING 4 — MILITARY / GEOPOLITICAL

Food supply chain attacks, industrial cyber, drone procurement. Also not your damn problem. Your problem is 111 devices that barely talk to each other and an AIDE integrity check that’s been hanging since last Tuesday.


Unresolved from the queue: CVE-2026-74255 on nova-core4 (linux-image-7.0.0-31-generic) still sitting. Multiple macOS CVEs on Office-M4-2.local (that machine’s basically off the network anyway). No remediations in 30 hours.

The real pattern across two weeks: The same three things keep coming back like a bad dream. Alert fatigue (1000+ events, ~10 real findings). AIDE timeouts (still happening, still unfixed). Home Assistant default credentials (flagged repeatedly, still not fixed). Fix those three, and your security posture moves from “beautifully formatted nonsense” to actually boring — which is exactly where you want to be. Little Mister, the night was quiet enough. Call that a win.
