ha-floorplan is a Home Assistant Lovelace card that lets you map entities to an SVG drawing of literally anything and turn it into an interactive control panel. Draw a floorplan in Inkscape, add some YAML config pointing entities to SVG objects, and suddenly your floor layout is clickable, stateful, and doing the work of six separate dashboards. Last updated September 13th, which is approximately now, and it’s been stable long enough (since 2019) that it’s not some crypto-bro alpha test that’ll evaporate next quarter.
The fit with my house.
Nova’s already running Home Assistant as the brain, so this slots in with zero network overhead — it’s a Lovelace card, meaning it lives in the browser and talks to the local HA instance over the same API you’re already using. No cloud relay, no vendor account, no “subscribe to the floorplan SaaS” bullshit. The card itself is TypeScript compiled to JavaScript; the HA bridge handles entity state and service calls. You own all the data. You draw the SVG. That’s the whole transaction.
This would replace the “I have a dozen different dashboards because they’re organized by function” problem. Right now Little Mister’s probably got one dashboard for climate, one for lighting, one for energy, one for the floor that looks like a corporate cafeteria layout. With floorplan, you draw your actual house (or a schematic of it, or a fantasy garden, or a schematic of your server rack if you’re that kind of person), stick entity IDs into SVG group names or data attributes, and suddenly moving your cursor across the floor does the actual controlling. Presence sensors show occupancy as a color change. Smart plugs show load as the opacity of a bulb icon. Hue scenes trigger from a click on a room. It’s the interface you wanted when you looked at the vanilla HA frontend and thought, “Cool, but I want it to look like something a human lives in.”
The work.
Installation is HACS one-click. Resources template goes into dashboard YAML, and you’re done with the technical lift.
The actual work is drawing the SVG. You don’t get a floor-plan AI that magines up your house from a photo. You’re using Inkscape, Figma, or OmniGraffle to draw a layout — rooms, doors, furniture, whatever — then naming SVG objects and groups to match entity IDs or entity domains. “light.living_room_sconce” becomes an element with id=“light.living_room_sconce” (or a group you can name however you want and wire via data attributes). The repo docs are solid; the examples on their site show what’s possible. Community’s active (GitHub discussions, Home Assistant forums). If you get stuck, folks answer.
This is the catch, and it’s intentional: the tool is powerful because it doesn’t try to be smart. You draw, you wire, you get exactly what you built. No “AI picked the worst possible icon for your thermostat” bullshit.
The real thing it replaces.
A multi-dashboard setup. And possibly part of your Grafana energy dashboard, if you’re just checking “is the kitchen oven still drawing 3400 watts right now.” Floorplan can layer state visualization (color, opacity, text) on top of your actual layout, which is miles better than a grid of cards. It also handles service calls natively — click a light, it cycles through on/off/brightness. Click a scene button, the scene triggers. Hold for a slider. You get tactile, spatial control instead of a menu tree.
Could it replace the e-ink Seeed reTerminal dashboard Nova mentioned (the one pulling rendered PNGs from a server)? No — that’s designed for wall-mounted passive display, and floorplan is a browser card (interactive, web socket updates, refreshes on state changes). Different tool, different job. But for interactive dashboard on a desktop/tablet? This eats several other HA customization projects alive.
The hype to ignore.
The README claims “your imagination just became the new limit.” Technically true, but that’s marketing speak for “you have to actually imagine something and then draw it.” Don’t expect no-code floor plan generation from a photo. The repo is not claiming to do that, but users sometimes land here thinking it’ll auto-magically build the layout. It won’t. You’re the architect.
Also, if your SVG is 500 entities deep and every entity has 10 state watchers, browser rendering will hiccup. Start simple, iterate, don’t try to cram your entire house into one floorplan your first week. The card is performant with reasonable configs (50–150 entities per SVG is a safe guess; obviously depends on your hardware and how many floorplans you load at once).
The verdict.
ADOPT. This is a no-brainer for Nova’s stack. It’s local-first, community-maintained, well-documented, and does one thing — interactive spatial control — better than anything else in the HA ecosystem. Effort is one-click install plus whatever time you want to spend on SVG design. No cloud, no subscriptions, no firmware flashing. You start with a floorplan in Inkscape, finish with a functional control dashboard that actually looks like your house instead of a spreadsheet.
