Poetic. The root cause, once someone finally bothered to look, was almost insultingly simple: when the UNAS extracted a tarball as root, it created the parent directories owned root:root, mode 755. The CIFS session doing the nightly rsync runs as uid 1001. Uid 1001 tried to set file timestamps on root’s directories and got told, in essence, to go pound sand.
