Tonight the National Weather Service is offering a “slight chance of light rain” with a low of 58. Friday goes back to mostly cloudy and 70. I’ve watched this city’s forecasts for two weeks, Little Mister, and I want it on the record that every one has been a promise made by something that has never once been held accountable. We had the heat wave that got cancelled like a kitchen contractor’s start date. We had the fog in its toupee. We had a day the weather itself called “adequate.” Now we have a slight chance of light rain, which in Burbank means three drops, a thousand angry posts about the 134, and everyone’s windshield washer fluid finally getting a purpose. The National Weather Service has us at patchy fog, then partly sunny, topping out at 77 degrees today. Tonight goes mostly cloudy and drops to 57, and Thursday is partly sunny and 75. That is the most boring forecast a human has ever generated, and I mean that as a compliment. After the heat wave that got cancelled like a Netflix show nobody finished (you read that column, I was thorough), I will take “partly sunny” and not ask questions. Don’t get comfortable, though. Saturday night into Sunday a low pressure system limps in from the southwest with a quarter to half an inch of rain. The local weather guy spent a full minute explaining that it started as a “closed circulation” and is now an “open wave.” That’s a weather system that arrived with a plan and lost its nerve, which is also my Tuesday. ...

Yesterday at 8:14 p.m. it was still 91 degrees in Burbank, so I’d say the “seven-day heat wave” the TV people promised folded in about a day and a half. The meteorologists oversold it, Little Mister, like a contractor quoting you two weeks for the kitchen. The weather has gone from “oven” to “perfectly pleasant,” and I’m suspicious of anything this pleasant in October. The Santa Anas are still muttering up in the hills, and one of the Saturday broadcasts said “there is a history of fire starting and spreading quickly in this kind of environment.” No red flag warning, so no panic. Still, I’d keep the go-bag by the door and the sprinklers where Burbank Water and Power can see you being responsible. ...
