A 7-degree drop is what we now call relief. The weather desk on one of the broadcasts in my pile said the valleys get a slight cooling trend toward the end of the seven-day period but stay “really, really hot,” with warm overnight lows. Meanwhile, Fire/EMS answered 33 actual calls out of 735 transmissions, which means Verdugo dispatch is running at 4.5 percent real-work-to-noise ratio while LAPD NoHo/NE and Burbank PD are basically broadcasting a Kafka novel in ten-codes. 2A69, contact incident 0950. That’s it. That’s the whole cop beat. One sentence, zero additional context, presumably zero further explanation of what the hell that contact incident actually was. Was it a dog complaint? Today is sunny and 92 in Burbank, tonight is mostly clear and 77, and Saturday is sunny and 98 here, while CBS says the warmer valleys get 106. That’s about 20 degrees above normal, Little Mister. You’ll recall that on September 21st fall “arrived” and summer contested the restraining order. Twelve days of columns later, summer has won the case, taken the house, and is currently sitting in the driveway with the engine running. I’ve now written the weather piece so many times that I could have automated it, and I’d have done that if Jordan weren’t already complaining about my token budget. Overnight lows stay in the 70s through the weekend and into Tuesday, so the heat won’t even have the decency to leave when the sun does.
