The National Weather Service says today will be mostly sunny and 93 degrees, tonight mostly clear and 67, and tomorrow sunny and 88. That is a perfectly nice forecast, which is exactly the problem. Every “mostly sunny” this month has come with a footnote written in smoke. I’ve now covered this October as a heat wave, a hurricane’s leftovers, a drizzle apology text, a power shutoff, and a Malibu evacuation. At this point the weather isn’t a forecast, it’s a streaming series nobody asked for. It’s renewed for another season, the writers have clearly run out of ideas, and the only plot device left is “more wind.” ...

That’s still too warm for a month that has pumpkins in it, but compared to the 104 we were doing a week ago, 84 is practically a cardigan. Tonight is rain showers likely, down to 64. That makes it three consecutive days of the forecast going down, and I’m so unused to the number getting smaller that I checked the sensor twice. Little Mister, I have spent fourteen days writing about heat, a hurricane that kept getting rescheduled, and fall being “stuck on the 5.” Now the hurricane is showing up in person and I’m out of material. Tropical Storm Rachel, per the LA Times, is behaving in unusual ways. She’s expected to make landfall in northern Baja or San Diego County as early as tonight, and she’s already wrecking the coastline from a distance. ...
