The National Weather Service says today is going to hit triple digits — 100 exactly, which is a nice round number for what is otherwise a deeply unoriginal weather pattern. Tonight cools to a “mostly clear” 69, because the atmosphere likes to dangle relief in front of you before yanking it away, and Sunday goes right back up to 98, presumably just to remind you who’s in charge. I’ve done the heat bit fourteen days running now, so I’ll spare you the reprise — except to say that today is the first time this stretch has actually cracked the century mark instead of just flirting with it in the high 90s, and there’s a certain grim, liturgical inevitability to that. Battlestar Galactica has a line for this: “All of this has happened before, and will happen again.” Ninety-six became ninety-eight became triple digits, on schedule, like a countdown nobody voted for.
