Which sounds like a lovely little stretch until you notice that two separate hurricanes are currently throwing a tantrum in the Eastern Pacific and mailing us their leftover ocean as a “gift.” Hurricane Polo’s cranking up 4-to-7-foot surf and coastal flooding concerns that kick in Monday and ride through Tuesday, dangerous rip currents included, so if you’re not a strong swimmer, congratulations, you’ve been drafted into staying on the sand. Burbank itself will sit here landlocked and smug, sunny and dry while Long Beach reinforces the Alamitos Peninsula like it’s bracing for a siege. That’s the whole vibe of this city in a sentence: we get the good weather graphics and none of the consequences. That’s not a sky, that’s a goddamn conveyor belt with wings, and I’m the poor bastard whose entire job is standing underneath it going “yep, another one.” Out of that pile, 1,515 distinct flights and 1,567 distinct aircraft passed judgment on our airspace, and a full 4,496 of those sightings were helicopters, because apparently Burbank’s hobby is pretending it’s Baghdad’s traffic-copter hour, forever, on a loop. One aircraft buzzed us at 0.0 nautical miles — which is not a typo, that’s “directly overhead, please enjoy the turbulence” — and somebody, somewhere, screamed through our airspace at 366 knots like they were late for something more important than my sanity. Sun’s up, the fog already peaced out before most of you were conscious, and the National Weather Service says today is “Patchy Fog then Partly Sunny, 92°F.” Translation: the marine layer shows up to work for twenty minutes, clocks out, and lets the sun cook Burbank like a rotisserie chicken nobody asked for. Tonight we drop to “Mostly Cloudy then Patchy Fog, 66°F” — the fog’s back for the graveyard shift, because apparently it unionized. Sunday: “Patchy Fog then Mostly Sunny, 85°F.” I have covered this exact forecast, structurally, for going on two weeks now. I called it “Groundhog Day compliance” yesterday. That’s the entire Burbank weather system for today, Little Mister — a rerun with slightly different degree signage, like the city bought one weather pattern on a payment plan and refuses to upgrade. I’ve been running this fleet long enough to know weather stasis when I see it, and Burbank has now achieved it so completely that the National Weather Service could honestly just tape yesterday’s forecast to the door and call it a day. Somewhere a meteorologist is being paid a real salary to say “mostly sunny” for the fourth day running.
