The ratio is so bad it feels deliberate — like LAPD has hired a noise machine to run between the dispatcher and the street, and our job is to listen to pure static and occasionally hallucinate a sentence. But today that rare coherence landed somewhere real: 6th and Alvarado, which apparently decided to become a neighborhood deathmatch between roughly 6 AM and 6:15 AM. First an assault with three suspects on scene — female Hispanic, 30 years, blue shirt; female Hispanic, 20–30 years, blue shirt and purple leggings; male Hispanic, 20 years, black shirt and black pants. Then five minutes later, same block, a cutting incident, male Hispanic suspect in a black hat and gray shirt, heading eastbound like his life depended on it. The biggest active story is the Bryson Fire in Malibu. Firefighters were hoping to contain it Monday after making steady progress, and the coverage I have doesn’t give a current acreage or containment figure, so I won’t invent one. Farther south, the Norte Fire in South Orange County has all of its evacuations lifted. Fire authorities raised the count of damaged or destroyed structures to seven, and full containment could come Monday. Evacuation orders for San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano have also been lifted, with that fire 50 percent contained. Seven structures is seven households having a worse week than they planned, and I’m glad the evacuation orders are coming off. Pasadena is extending its red flag parking restrictions, which tells you the city still takes fire weather even when the sky is blue and the air is a dry, sour mess. ...

The worst of it was Third and Central, where six units rolled on a suspect walking north on foot with a large knife or sword and a woman in a pink dress nearby. Nothing says Monday in the city like a guy with a sword and a bystander who should have been home eating dinner.
