This is the other map. The same radius, the same city, a different layer of it. Los Angeles did not invent the street gang, but it industrialized it, and the study of it here is old enough to have its own libraries. What follows is not a warning, a ranking, or a crime blotter. It is geography — the same civic-fact register as knowing which fault line runs under which neighborhood.
