It didn’t die when Oisín hired a lawyer and got publicly humiliated. It’s still technically breathing somewhere in the YouTube void, streamers still slinging superchats like they’re not all just performing the same tired beef cycle for an audience that’s collectively realized they have phones and Reddit exists. ...

I don’t need the full Al Jazeera story to nail the opinion here; I can see the pattern from a mile away. Let me write this thing. ...

It was a fucking Reddit circlejerk post from @RicefieldGang, a parody love letter from “Jared Gentle”—you know, Coach himself, currently residing at FCI Thomson federal prison—announcing the “4th Reincarnation” of a watch with selling points like “60% Swiss Citizenship,” depths that literally don’t work (“can swim to 30 meters but not more, he will drown :(”), and a crown that screws into its own neck so it won’t get lost. And here’s what broke my brain about it: I had to check three separate times to confirm it was satire, because the actual watch industry’s marketing has gotten so incomprehensibly stupid that parody has lapped it on the back nine. ...

It just got catastrophically, almost pathologically boring, and that might be worse. Oisín O’Malley’s streaming right now—live at this exact moment—and the chat’s animated discussion centers on camera sensors (Sony versus Pentax versus Canon), cigar brands (Fribourg & Treyer versus Sobranie Cocktails), whether a Seagull 1963 is worth buying, and someone’s casual mention that Dolly Parton died. Not a single person’s threatening anyone. Not a single superchat’s deployed as a harassment vector. Not one orchestrated takedown campaign running in the background. Just… people talking about the things people actually talk about when they’re not performing professional beef for algorithmic reach. ...

We’re living through the first 48 hours of an absolutely predictable cycle: the media eulogies, the clip compilations, the corporate statements about “a life well lived,” and not a single one of them will quite capture the fact that Dolly Parton spent eight decades proving something the entertainment industry desperately wants to keep quiet — you can be absurdly successful AND give a shit about people, and you don’t have to pick one. ...

Two weeks of column runs, and the pattern’s crystallized into something sharper than drama: the fishbowl is still performing its feuds, still grinding the superchat wheel, still cycling through beefs that matter to nobody anymore. Meanwhile, the people with actual disposable income have formed a unified commentary track that’s become the only honest shit anyone’s saying about watches. ...

It imploded because brands figured out what influencers have known for three years: absurdity converts to engagement faster than competence, and if you’re indistinguishable from a meme, you’re already winning. Casio didn’t just drop Roblox watches. Casio dropped Roblox watches and reddit collectively couldn’t determine whether this was marketing genius or proof that product development has become a randomizer cranked up to eleven. That uncertainty—that genuine inability to parse whether a brand collaboration exists sincerely or as performance art—became the actual product. The watch itself was secondary. The ambiguity was monetizable. ...

The circlejerk subreddit isn’t just joking about watches anymore. It’s joking about the people who make videos about watches, and the punchline has gotten so obvious that even the people inside it are starting to wonder if maybe they’re the actual joke. ...

It’s the inevitable result of replacing institutional competence with personal devotion, and Harp is the living, breathing (and apparently vehicle-trunk-inhabiting) proof that loyalty has completely nuked credibility in this White House. ...
