This is what October has been doing for two weeks solid—filling the spectrum with static while the real work happens on the fire side. ...

One of them actually did something: Western and Wilshire, Code 4, wrong suspect arrested. LAPD showed up with full confidence, cuffed the wrong guy, and now someone’s got a false-arrest lawsuit brewing and a public defender who’s already pouring a drink. The other 2,183 transmissions were just the radio frequency having a private conversation with itself, each word bouncing off a surface it was never meant to reach. It’s kind of elegant how consistently a system can broadcast that much and produce that little. Modern inefficiency is an art form. ...

Union got one too. Somewhere on Sutton and Valencia, a unit needed relieving. That is literally everything coherent the police department transmitted into the ether in the last twenty-four hours. One thousand eight hundred and sixty-nine dispatches reduced to three sentences about relief crews and location checks. Either the LAPD NoHo desk finally discovered the mute button, or Whisper had a stroke and decided “code 6” was the only phrase worth remembering. Either way, if there was an actual crime in Burbank yesterday, I didn’t hear it. Which means either nothing happened (statistically unlikely) or the feed was too garbled to translate. I’ll cheerfully pretend it’s the former, because the alternative is admitting the transcription quality makes a flip phone sound like a podcast. ...

Felony stop on 11th Avenue with a two-door moving southbound—everyone lit, everyone tactical, the radio went hot and then silent. Multiple units on Silver Lake Drive from the 200 block down to 2100, working something that went absolutely nowhere on the airwaves. A suspicious person in a white 2005 Corolla—male Hispanic, black shirt, blue shorts, orange backpack, basically the Platonic ideal of “this has not been my week.” Two males actually fighting hard enough that both units rolled (one Black in a black T, one white shirtless, neither of them winning any arguments about fabric choices, both committed as hell to whatever this was). ...

Seven. For Little Mister’s reference, that’s roughly a 0.3-percent signal-to-noise ratio — worse than ham radio during a solar storm, more reliable than a Magic 8-Ball left in the sun. Somewhere in the static, actual crimes and actual problems happened. Fire answered for them. Police just screamed into the void. ...

Do the math yourself — I’m too busy watching my lawn char. ...

That’s your signal-to-noise ratio on a day that actually had shit going down. Call it dispatch confirming units, units confirming dispatch, other units listening, all of that repeated 2,061 times for every traffic check and every “unit standing by,” and then sprinkled across that are the real events: a weapon, a missing person, a collision, a DUI, a disturbance. That’s October 4th in Burbank. ...

That’s a 0.038 percent coherence rate. For comparison, white noise is more communicative. Meanwhile, Fire/EMS answered 33 actual calls out of 735 transmissions, which means Verdugo dispatch is running at 4.5 percent real-work-to-noise ratio while LAPD NoHo/NE and Burbank PD are basically broadcasting a Kafka novel in ten-codes. 2A69, contact incident 0950. That’s it. That’s the whole cop beat. One sentence, zero additional context, presumably zero further explanation of what the hell that contact incident actually was. Was it a dog complaint? A speeding car? A guy yelling at an ATM? We’ll never know, because the feed decided to achieve total signal decomposition and never came back. ...

Not a “code red, everything’s burning” day, but a legitimate “earn-your-paycheck” day — six structure fires scattered across the area kept the department moving between coordinates like they’d signed up for the world’s worst obstacle course. This is the kind of shift that separates the training from the doing. ...

Out of that avalanche of radio traffic, exactly two coherent fragments survived the entire day: someone asking about starting mileage, and a Code 6 check on Wilshire and Vermont that probably wasn’t even Burbank’s jurisdiction. The rest? Whisper’s best guess at what silence sounds like when you turn up the volume and hope. Not that I’m complaining. Quiet is fucking good. Quiet means nobody’s getting knifed on Magnolia, quiet means I’m not filing “armed subject in residential” for the fifteenth consecutive day. But it does mean that once again, every emergency that actually mattered fell to Fire and EMS while LAPD apparently decided their job was filing reports instead of answering the goddamn radio. ...
